Spider of Steel

So, how about that Spider-Man? With his Spider-Tracers, Web Shooters, and Spider Light he sure seems like the inventive type. But before The Amazing Spider-Man ever became The Iron Spider-Man, he had a foe/friend who took the motif a little too far. This week's Z-Lister is the itsy-bitsy Steel Spider!
Oliver Osnick was created by Bill Mantlo and Ed Hannigan in 1982's "The Spectacular Spider-Man #72". Ollie was an overweight high school student who was constantly harassed, despite his intelligence. This taunting from his peers caused Ollie to grow an admiration for Doctor Otto Octavius, aka the villain Doctor Octopus. Duh! Ollie saw that Otto's experience as a teenager was much like his own and took it as inspiration to become Kid Ock. He invented less-impressive robotic tentacles and dressed up as Doc Ock, he then began a career of villainy. One such crime was convincing other teens to dress up like other Spider-Man villains, but those kids ended up ditching Kid Ock when Spider-Man showed up to stop him. Spider-Man though Ollie was the real Doctor Octopus and chased him into a toy store. Their fight eventually brings them into a tank of water where Spider-Man rips off one of the tentacles and realizes Ollie is just some kid and pulls him from the water before he can drown. Ollie wakes up back home that night.
Ollie reappeared in "The Amazing Spider-Man #263" as Spider Kid. Ollie was so impressed and enthralled by Spidey, he redesigned his tentacles into spider legs and donned a Spider-Man Halloween costume, turning his life of crime into a life of heroism. Unfortunately, most of hero career consisted of Spider-Man saving him from trouble. After these adventures and serving on a team called The Misfits, Ollie decides to hang the legs up and become a normal kid.
The next time we saw Ollie was in "Spider-Man Unlimited #5" were we learn during his college years he began working out and became very physically fit. He also kept his dreams of heroism to a minimum, simply perfecting his robotic legs as a hobby. However, Ollie's girlfriend was shot and paralyzed by a group of muggers and Ollie dons the new persona of Steel Spider, equip with a black suit and weaponized robotic spider-legs. As Steel Spider, Ollie brutalized the muggers and held back at the last minute, choosing to turn them in rather than kill them. Ollie hung up the suit again after this, choosing his girlfriend over his heroism.
Ollie dons the Steel Spider suit again when The Superhuman Registration Act puts a ban on unregistered superheroes. Acting against this government system, Steel Spider becomes the target of The Thunderbolts who are a team of villains ordered by the government to work as soldiers. They're like Marvel's Suicide Squad if that makes it easier. The Thunderbolts at that point were led by Norman Osborn-former Green Goblin, then Iron Patriot and Director of SHIELD-who broke into laughter every time he even thought about Steel Spider. Backed by American Eagle and Sepulcher, Steel Spider battled The Thunderbolts to a stand-still. The fight concludes after Venom (Mac Gargan) bites off Steel Spider's left arm. His real arm. Ollie is imprisoned in Prison 42 and is most likely released after Norman is kicked out of SHIELD, however his current whereabouts are unknown.
It's nice to see the kind of influence Spider-Man has on people, especially those who live lives not too far from his own. I always thought if Peter Parker was supposed your typical nerd shouldn't he be overweight? Though, that ruins his mobility as Spider-Man. That's why this character is appealing to me, this character shows that you don't need to be slim to be a Spider-character. And the arc this character goes through from being a vengeful loser to a dimwitted hero to a badass vigilante is awesome, I love seeing characters evolve in that way. I really hope Steel Spider shows up again soon, it's not Spider-Man is using the Iron Spider suit so he could pass that along to Ollie. Not to mention that Peter Parker's current company Parker Industries employs Spider-Man/Peter Parker allies like Harry Osborn and Hobie Brown, why can't Peter give Ol' Righty a job? And hopefully a prosthetic. In any case, whether he reappears or not, I think Oliver Osnick is a fine example of what a Spider-Man supporting character can be!

The Silent R

Did you know Steven Spielberg inadvertently created the PG-13 film rating? Apparently "Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom" was so violent it led to the creation of PG-13. That's important because most superhero movies are PG-13, well, they used to be. Today we're going to talk about the film industries desire to make your Friendly Neighborhood Superheroes a little grittier.
Deadpool. A character who's live action film has taken the country by storm and reminded comic book fans that 20th Century Fox is at their best when they have nothing to do with their movies. Yellow costumes, expressive white eyes, all the makings of a loyal comic book movie. But among all the other things people talk about when it comes to "Deadpool", there is one detail people have come to admire, it's rating. When "Deadpool" was announced to be Rating R there was a lot of cheer from fans and a lot of dispute from parents. For a while, there was even a petition to have a PG-13 version of the film released. Lets be perfectly honest, parents only wanted the film rating knocked down because most superhero movies are PG-13 and if a parent takes their child to a PG-13 film nobody really cares. You know, because Nazi-punching steroid men and alcoholic perverts in war-progressing armors are totally for children. However, if you're the kind of parent who takes their kid to a Rated R movie you'll be judged by society. And here we all thought that peer pressure ended after high school. As expected the petition failed and we got the Rated R Deadpool we all wanted. And after seeing that the rating of the film didn't effect the box office success, many film studios were quick to jump on the Rated R bandwagon. Fox announces "Wolverine 3" to be Rated R, Todd McFarlane tosses a Rated R film script for "Spawn" into the wind, even Sony Pictures claims a Rated R "Venom" movie to be in development. What makes the last announcement interesting is that Sony's comic book movie career hinges on Marvel Studios. After the infamous Sony Email Leak and the flop that was "Amazing Spider-Man 2", Sony and Marvel Studios decided to work together and share Spider-Man. That's why you saw him in the "Captain America: Civil War" trailer and why there will be no "Amazing Spider-Man 3". Thank Rao for that. Marvel Studios seems to be the only player with dignity because they claimed they wouldn't make any Rated R films. Did Sony obey? No. They bit the hand that fed them and said this Rated R Venom film would be separate from The Marvel Cinematic Universe, but would have it's own Spider-Man. Sony apparently has issues with commitment. Marvel Studios' refusal to make Rated R films is mostly there because everything dark and adult about the MCU is on Netflix right now. There you go Sony, Rated R Venom on Netflix.
But Marvel Comics characters aren't the only ones feeling the wave of "Deadpool". Sadly, Warner Brothers Studios is feeling the "aster" too. Zack Snyder announced that the blu-ray edition of "Batman v. Superman: Dumb of Justice" will be Rated R and feature more violence. Before you have any thought on this, I want you to say this out loud: Superman in a Rated R movie. Think about that. Think about every Superman you have ever seen. Movies, video games, cartoons, television. No matter how dark, or how light, when you think of Superman can you rationalize a Rated R take on the character. Maybe you can, but should you? Should Superman be Rated R? Batman can be Rated R, sure. He fights murderers and psychopaths, his films could be like "Clockwork Orange" or "Se7en" and there would still be more believability to it. But Superman? The American icon? The father of all superheroes? The reason we have all the Deadpools and Batmans and Avengers we have today? Should the very first superhero be Rated R? What does that say about society? Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Mary Poppins, Popeye, Scooby Doo, Luke Skywalker, Dorthy Gale, Homer Simpson, these are a few of America's most well-known and beloved fictional characters and they shouldn't be Rated R. They all represent good and wonder and purity. No matter what the subject matter is, at the end of the day these are icons. Superman is an icon!
Clearly, Snyder and everyone else in the film industry just wants that "Deadpool" money, but none of them care how they get it. It doesn't matter how historical these characters are because to these film makers they're just names that draw attention, and attention draws money, and if something makes money they will do it again and again and again without any concern to the character's reputation. People who don't read comics and only see the movies think Superman is destructive, boring, and a cold killer. He is not. People think Batman is an aggressive, lonely, cry baby. He is not. And if this Rated R craze grows successful it will bury any creditability Warner Bros has. Remember when everyone was afraid superhero movies would die off? This is the thing that will kill them. The obsession over violence and negativity that Warner is pushing into their films will be the death of DC Comic's films. Warner Bros' competitor will become their superior.
"Deadpool" was not the first Rated R comic book movie, but because people see Deadpool as a costumed superhero more than "Blade", "The Punisher", "Kingsman: Secret Service", "Watchmen", "V for Vendetta" or "300", everybody thinks he's the trend setter. I don't want to see Superman in a Rated R setting, I don't want Venom to get a film simply on the merits of a rating system. Films should be made for their effect, not for their subject matter or label. It's bad enough our society is so focused on racial and sexual labels already. If Zack Snyder wants to make a Rated R superhero movie he should just invent one. Same goes for Sony and Fox and whoever else who thinks a rating will sell tickets. Better they fail at that then drag the potential of real comic book characters down with them. That's the real crime behind Rated R comic book films, for characters who aren't meant to be Rated R all it does is ruin their potential. "Batman v. Superman: Death of Justice" could have been the film to save The DC Comics Film Industry, but as the rumors continue we're more likely to see Zack Snyder turn The Justice League into the new Watchemen. And in that case, nobody will watch The Watchmen.
Thank you for reading.

A Very Harley Christmas

"Harley's Holiday"
We open on a trailer for a "Lobo" film, but then the channel flips to an 80's kung-fu style "Great Ten" film, the channel flips again showing a sitcom called "Angel & The Ape", yet again it flips to a documentary on "The Amazing Man". Harley Quinn-sitting in a recliner in front of a fire place-shuts off the TV and complains that there's nothing good on. In the corner of the room is a family of three tied up. Harley sees them squirming and tells them that despite nothing good being on TV, she'll tell them a story about her last Christmas adventure.
Now in the current timeline, we see Gotham City covered in December snowfall and all of Gotham's citizens are hustling about to buy presents. Running through the city is Harley Quinn with a sack of merchandise over her shoulder. She hides behind a wall and is wrapped in a grappling hook, then she is pulled up to the rooftop where Batman (the new Batman, Dick Grayson) stands before her. Harley claims all the stuff she took was paid for, but Batman reminds her she paid in Christmas cookies. Harley defends herself by pointing out how hard it is for a convict to get a job. Batman lets Harley off the hook because he knows she's been good ever since the events of "Death of The Family" and tells her to just go home. At her apartment Harley looks at her little Christmas tree, decorated with only one ornament. She remembers buying that ornament with her parents. Harley calls up Poison Ivy and asks her to join her for Christmas festivities, but Ivy hates Christmas. Mostly because the cold climate and traditions of reefs and trees are harmful to plants. Ivy does motivate Harley to spend the holiday doing something of value.
We see a teenage girl running into a sewer. She trips in the sludge and frantically rolls around in waste, throwing up a little too. We see visible bruises along her arm and she repeats "no home" over and over as she curls into a ball. In the water before her she sees a face, clearly severed off of a head. It's white skin and red lips remind the girl of The Joker, a man who seemed invincible even to "The Batman". The Joker didn't need a home, The Joker didn't need anything. The teenage girl takes her belt and straps the face so her own, creating a mask out of it. She rises from the sewer slime, reborn as The Joker's Daughter.
The next morning Harley tries to buy a coffee at a Starbucks, but the employees refuse to serve her. Harley rants until a handsome man walks in and buys a coffee for her. When they sit down Harley recognizes this man as Jack Ryder a former talk show host. The two of them have an awkward relationship because of the events of "Gotham Central" a TV show that would be part of this hypothetical cinematic universe. In "Gotham Central" there would be an episode where Harley Quinn kidnaps various Gotham celebrities and drop them in acid in an attempt to create a new Joker. Jack was dropped only for a few seconds, but developed a multiple personality called "The Creeper" which prayed on the lives of criminals. Jack forgives Harley for those events, showing that Wayne Industries provided him with a patch that sends electric pulses to the part of his brain damaged by the acid. While the electro-patch kept The Creeper buried, Jack rebuilt his life and came to the conclusion that if he could be given another chance at happiness, so should Harley Quinn.
That night, a few rocks are tossed at Poison Ivy's greenhouse. A microwave is then tossed at the greenhouse and it breaks the glass. Harley Quinn crawls in and Ivy-who has grown accustomed to Harley's antics-invites her in. Harley tells Ivy all about what Jack said and that she wants to spend Christmas righting her wrongs and she needs Ivy's help to do it. As long as she promises to get a plastic tree, Ivy agrees to help Harley. Harley and Ivy go to Jack's house in the middle of the night and try to recruit him too, but Jack points out how late it is and how he has to work tomorrow and blah blah blah. Ivy knocks Jack out with some spores and Harley takes off the electro-patch to see if Jack would liven up without it. As they skip off, we see The Joker's Daughter watching from a sewer vent. The Joker's Daughter looks in a reflection of water where the Joker's face tells her to wipe away those who abandoned him, to kill the traitor Harley Quinn.
Back at her apartment, Harley shows Poison Ivy and the tied-up Jack Ryder a list called "The Hit Christmas Forgiveness List". Harley and her friends will visit each person on the list and give them a present. Their first target is obvious: Batman. Jack asks how Harley even plans on catching Batman. The Bat-Signal appears in the night sky and Batman swoops down onto the roof of the police station. He sees Officer Harvey Bullock tied up with Christmas light and goes to release him, but he is stopped by Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy. Harley gives Batman an Xmas gift and he scans in with his suit's tech, acknowledging that it isn't a trap. He opens the gift to find a knitted sweater with a big bat symbol on it. Batman regards how it's kind of big and Harley points out that she was going off "the older, fatter Batman's measurements". Batman thanks Harley and tells her to go away before he arrests her for assaulting an officer. Harvey Bullock undoes the lights and demands he get a gift too. When Harley asks what he wants, Bullock instead tells her what he wants to give. Harley and Ivy walk back to their car and each of them have a black eye. Harley opens the trunk where Jack is tied up in ribbons next to all the presents. Jack asks about the black eye and Harley claims she found the opposite of a mistletoe. As they drive off, The Joker's Daughter rolls up on a pink bicycle and tries to follow them.
On their way too Metropolis the girls take refuge in a one-bed motel. Harley and Ivy slumber in a bed together while Jack Ryder is locked in the bathroom. Jack starts to sweat and breath heavy, he rips out of the ribbons and climbs out of the tub he was tossed in. Looking in the mirror he sees his skin become yellow and he sees himself giggling uncontrollably. Harley and Ivy hear a window break and run into the bathroom where Jack has jumped out of the window. Oddly enough, everything but his underwear is on the floor and the complimentary towel is gone. From the bushes outside the motel, The Joker's Daughter watches as Harley and Ivy run out and get in their car. The Joker's Daughter snickers as she claims the car's rear tire has been slashed and that they'll never get anywhere. However, the girls drive the car despite the slashed tire and end up driving into The Joker's Daughter. Harley calmly tells Ivy to back up and just go around the girl they just hit.
Harley and Ivy pull up in front of a biker bar (the same bar destroyed in "Superman: Doom") where several beat-up bikers lay around the bar. The only two conscious people are the bartender and Jack Ryder, who are laughing about a funny story the barkeep tells. Jack is dressed only in his red underwear and the towel he fashioned into a cape, the rest of his body is yellow and his hair has turned green, his eyes are bloodshot and he's constantly smiling. He turns to see Harley and makes a "woof woof" sound. When Harley refers to Jack, he insists that she call him Creeper. Poison Ivy tries to offer Creeper a jacket because of how cold it is, but Creeper sees the jacket as a straightjacket and kicks Ivy across the room. Poison Ivy and The Creeper get ready to fight as Harley stands between them.
A car of juggalos (fans of The Insane Clown Posse) speeds down the road singing along with their music. They stop the car when they see The Joker's Daughter shambling in the middle of the road. Back at the biker bar, Poison Ivy and The Creeper fight and Creeper shows how pain doesn't effect him. Harley grows tired of the fight and just uses her charm to convince The Creeper to stop, which he does. The three of them leave the bar, and while the bartender is angry he's at least happy the bar wasn't destroyed. One of the biker's wakes up and sees Harley, Ivy and Creeper drive off. The Joker's Daughter wakes up in the car of juggalos (two in the front, three in the back, she's laying down on the three in the back). They ask her if she's going to the Insane Clown Posse and if she wants to party with them, but she pulls out a gun and orders them to stop the car. Harley and her crew drive past just as the juggalos' car pulls over. The Joker's Daughter lines the juggalos up and thinks about which she should kill first. When she mentions that she's The Joker's Daughter, the juggalos beg to join her. They tell her that The Joker was "literally an insane clown" and that if she's his daughter they will follow her wherever she goes. The Joker's Daughter decides to recruit the juggalos as her minions and they get in the car (her in the passenger seat, three men in the back, one man awkwardly laying across the laps of the men in the back). The Joker Posse car drives off as the group of bikers (Heaven's Demons) follow them.
Harley and friends get to Metropolis where Barbara Gordon and Jim Gordon are currently living. They go the hotel the Gordon's are staying at and must disguise themselves as a group of circus performers, Harley being a clown, Creeper being a strongman, and Ivy being a bearded lady (using moss as a beard). Harley needs to talk to Barbara Gordon alone so Ivy and Creeper disguise themselves as FBI agents and tell Jim Gordon that they need his help. They stuff Jim into a car and put a bag over his head so that "he doesn't know where their secret base is". Barbara enters the kitchen to find Harley standing there. Barbara is instantly mad because Harley broke in, and since her father is missing that means Harley probably kidnapped him too. Harley tries to offer Barbara a present, but she knocks it out of her hands and tells her that she won't fall for her tricks and The Joker has already taken enough from her. Harley snaps back and tells Babs that she lost a lot to Joker too. "You and your people think you're the only victims? You think all The Joker did was dress me up and boss me around? You know I'm actually jealous of how merciful he was with you. I wish he ruined my life just for a laugh, just for a cause, but he didn't! He brainwashed me, he abused me, he told me I was dirt until he needed some food on his plate" she goes on, "After he came back and humiliated me, I told myself I wouldn't let his actions define me. But here I am still wearing this stupid costume and smiling my stupid smile for what? To be happy? Or maybe I'm just afraid a white face and a smile is all I have left. Maybe I'm afraid if I take Harley Quinn off, there won't be enough of Harleen Quinzel left". Harley puts the present on Babs' lap and leaves the room. Ivy and Creeper are still driving around with Jim all masked up. Ivy gets a text from Harley and they dump him at a barbershop in the bad part of town. Jim gets approached by a gang and easily beats them up. When Jim leaves, the gang think about following him, but then decide they should go after the two people who dropped him off.
Harley and friends go to another motel in Metropolis. Ivy goes out to buy some food while Harley tells Creeper that she's starting to doubt herself and that maybe this whole trip was a bad idea. Creeper starts to regress into Jack and he cheers Harley up. As she walks out of a convenience store Ivy notices three separate cars following her. She gets back to the motel and tells Harley that they're being followed, but she gets back just as Harley and Creeper are "in the middle of it". Bullets start flying into the room and three of them duck for cover. We see the gangsters from before are shooting into the motel room, but they are stopped by The Heaven's Demons. As the two groups run out, a bomb goes off destroying their car. The juggalos continue to make Molotov Cocktails and toss them from their car as The Joker's Daughter commands. One of the juggalos is starting to question their actions, but The Joker's Daughter playfully honks his nose and tells him there's always a place for "The Joker's Son-In-Law". Harley, Ivy and Creeper escape as the juggalos, the gangsters, and the bike crew fight each other. They try to steal a car, but the driver uses a taser to shock Creeper, knocking him out. Ivy uses her powers to seduce the driver into being their getaway driver. Creeper wakes up and due to the shock he has returned to being Jack Ryder. Against Harley's pleads, Jack gets out of the car and leaves the group. Before they try to get Jack back, Harley expresses that there is one more place she needs to go. The three factions continue to fight as The Joker's Daughter walks past them and atop a parked car. The tells them that they all want the same thing: The death of Harley Quinn and her friends. The three groups band together and break into a hardware store, outfitting themselves with weapons and tools.
In a suburban neighborhood Harley and Ivy walk towards Harley's childhood home. Before they can reach it several canisters are tossed around them and cover the area in toxic fumes. The two girls are knocked out as The Joker's Daughter and her army surround them. Jack Ryder walks along the highway trying to hitchhike, he passes a pond where he sees the reflection of The Creeper in the water. The Creeper tells him that Harley needs their help, but more Jack than him. Jack is still tormented by being tricked by Harley twice, but Creeper convinces him that Harley isn't trying to trick Jack, but instead she's trying to give Jack that second chance he believes in. Maybe forgiving her was a start, but Jack needs to forgive himself and what he's become, he needs to channel his good nature and give both sides of himself a second chance. A truck pulls by offering Jack a ride. Jack smells the lipstick Harley left on his cheek and uses his powers to get her scent and have the trucker drive him towards her.
Harley Quinn wakes up hung upside down over a pool of water in a broken down gymnasium. She looks over and sees Poison Ivy chained up in a tub of ice. The Joker's Daughter and her army stand around Harley and The Joker's Daughter claims she will wipe Harley away by simulating the birth of The Joker. Only when Harley is dumped into this pool of water she won't emerge a new person, she won't even emerge at all! Suddenly, all the lights in the gym start flashing and alarms distract The Joker's Daughter and her army. Crashing through the wall comes Creeper who stole the truck. While Creeper fights The Joker's Daughter's men, a flying drone flies over carrying a re-breather (a gadget used by Batman to supply air while he's submerged in water or gas). The drone then fires a laser that cuts Harley's handcuffs and rope. Harley then drops into the pool below. The Joker's Daughter runs over to finish off Poison Ivy, but Harley Quinn emerges from the pool and forces The Joker's Daughter to flee. Harley helps Ivy out of the pool and Ivy tells her to follow the girl. Harley first runs over to Creeper and gives him a kiss. Poison Ivy and The Creeper use their powers to fight the bikers, the juggalos and the gangsters. Harley sees The Joker's Daughter get into a car and drive off, luckily a remote controlled motorcycle shows up and Harley hops on it. While on the bike, the voice of Barbara speaks through. When Harley asks why she's helping her, Barbara claims she deserves a second chance.
The Joker's Daughter pulls to the end of a high cliff where she stops just before the ledge, but Harley rams into her and the two crash down the cliff. When Harley wakes up, The Joker's Daughter tries drowning her in the rapid river near them. Harley gets herself free, but she's knocked in the back of the head by The Joker's Daughter who ripped off a sharp of metal from the car. The Joker's Daughter beats her with the metal and Harley sees flashes of The Joker doing the same. The Joker's Daughter prepares to stab her with the metal, she asks if Harley has any last words. "Thats...that's not his face" Harley says. The Joker's Daughter doesn't believe her, but Harley says the nose is all wrong and the lips are too thick. If anyone knows the finer details of The Joker's face, it's her. The Joker's Daughter drops the metal next to Harley and walks towards the river, looking down as she claims she wanted it to be his face so bad, she wanted an identity, she wanted to be as ugly as she felt. Being part of his legacy made her feel important, but she just fooled herself. Harley looks as the sharp metal for a moment, but remembers who she is. Harley tells the teen to remove the face, when she does Harley tells her that she is beautiful. Harley tells her to throw away the face, but the teen doesn't think she can. Harley puts her hands in the river and uses the water to wash her white face paint off. Harley and the teen hold hands and the teen tosses the face into the rushing water. The teen tells Harley her name is Duela and the two walk away from the river.
The Creeper and Poison Ivy successfully defeat all the groups and Harley Quinn convinces all of them that everyone deserves a second chance. No matter how bad they may be. That night, Poison Ivy, Creeper, Duela and all three groups stand behind Harley Quinn as she prepares to knock on the door of her parents, who she hasn't seen in years. She tells Ivy that her family was broken and crazy and the reason she got into psychology in the first place. When the door opens, Harley's parents open the door and instantly welcome her in with open arms. Harley's mother tells her that after Harley went off to become a psychologist she and her father worked out their issues in couples counseling and spent years hoping she'd come back.
The next day, Harley hosts an Xmas Eve party at her parent's house with Ivy, Jack, Duela, Barbara, Jim, and all three gangs. Babs wear's the "I'm Batty For Christmas" sweater and hugs Harley, telling her that she is sorry for how she treated her. Jim Gordon agrees to drive Duela to her parent's house the next day and help sort out any problems the family has, Jim has some experience dealing with abusive families. Harley gives Jack his electro-patch back and she claims only one thing could make this the perfect Christmas. Poison Ivy uses her powers to create a mistletoe above Harley and Jack and the two of them kiss.
Harley finishes telling the story to the tied up family, apparently leaving out the part where she fought The Teen Titans and stole Amanda Waller's underwear. The family of three asks how Harley knew details of the story she wasn't there to witness. How could The Creeper be immune to pain, but get knocked out by a taser? Why didn't The Joker's Daughter just kill Harley when she was hit with the tear gas? Harley gets mad and asks them why they don't have a Christmas Tree and the family claim that not only was Xmas a week ago (meaning Harley's story is only a week old), but that the family is Jewish. "Really" Harley says, "I'm Jewish too. I just got inta' Christmas cuz they have better songs". We fade out as Harley and the kidnapped family sing a traditional Hanuka song and Harley messes up the words.
After the credits, we see a group of explorers called "The Challengers of The Unknown" guiding another man to an ancient Mayan temple. They find a large stone giant collapsed over the landscape. The Challengers claim this giant has been here for centuries, most likely built as some guardians to the temple. However, their guest tells them the giant was placed here to be Darkseid's front-line weapon in case Earth was ever to be taken. The guest-Glorious Godfrey-uses his powers of mind control on the Challengers. The Challengers paint symbols on the giant which cause it to rise from it's sleep. Godfrey tells this giant-named Devilance-that his use has finally come. Darkseid needs him.

The Last Laugh

"Death of The Family"
The film begins with Batman busting into Arkham Asylum, fighting inmates with ease as he gets closer to his destination. Mr Freeze, Bane, Clayface, and many others get their cheap hit in, but Batman continues to plow through them. He stops in front of a single cell door, hearing faint giggling behind it. Before he can reach the door, Poison Ivy's vine grabs him and drag him back to be dog-piled by his villains. The last thing he sees in the door he couldn't reach. Alfred's voice is heard and Bruce Wayne takes off his simulation helmet. Bruce has been in the rebuilt Batcave using new Virtual Reality technology to train. Bruce tries to explain how the system works, but Alfred reminds him just what day it is.
Bruce comes upstairs-walking cane in hand- to see his guests waiting for him: Dick Grayson (Nightwing), Barbara Gordon (Oracle), Tim Drake (Robin), Cassandra Kane (Batgirl), Stephanie Brown (Spoiler), Selina Kyle (Catwoman), Holly Robinson (Wildcat), and Commissioner Jim Gordon. Bruce welcomes them with a "Happy Thanksgiving" and everyone begins to mingle. Through the conversations we learn Bruce told Jim Gordon the truth after "Court of Owls", but that Jim had known for a long time and chose to keep it secret. Barbara teasingly calls her father a vigilante before going to take a photo with Cassy and Steph. Jim asks if Bruce has a boxing ring in the cave, when Bruce asks why Jim explains that when he found out Bruce was Batman he shortly learned later that Barbara used to be Batgirl. While Jim can't blame Bruce for The Joker crippling Barbara, he still wants to get his anger out on Bruce without ruining their friendship. Barbara was her own woman when she got involved in Batman's crusade, and if she hadn't joined him she would've probably found some other way of fighting crime. While Bruce, Dick, Tim and Jim play some catch, Selina shows Holly a vase above the fireplace and tells Holly that Selina almost stole that vase before she knew Batman's secret identity. Holly asks what stopped her and she claimed the portrait of Bruce's parents guilt-tripped her. Plus, Alfred walked in with a shotgun and she really didn't feel like beating up an old man. Before dinner, Bruce makes a speech on how for most of his life he felt the weight of being alone, how being Batman always reminded him of the family he lost, but seeing all of these people with him today reminds him that he has more family than he thought. Dick Grayson apologizes for ruining Bruce's moment, but he proposes to Barbara Gordon and she says yes.
While everyone is asleep in the manor that night, Bruce wakes Dick up and they go down to the Batcave. Bruce shows Dick a new bat-suit he had been working on. With a built-in exoskeleton, preloaded weapons, high-tech detective systems, jet propulsion, and titanium armor (for a description, it is identical to Luke Fox's Batwing suit and/or a Batman Beyond suit with a blue symbol). Bruce regards it's various modes and capabilities and Dick interrupts him by noticing the suit was made too small to fit Bruce. Dick assumed this was going to help Bruce fight crime, but then sees the measurements of the suit match his own. Bruce wants Dick to take over as Batman and protect Gotham City, but Dick couldn't be more angry. He just proposed to the woman he loves, he's planning on hanging up the mask and moving on with his life and only a few hours later Bruce tosses this on him. Dick claims he's done with Gotham, he's done with the cave, he's done with all of it and if Bruce can't accept the goals of anyone else but himself than the only part of Bruce's life Dick won't leave behind is Barbara. Dick walks back upstairs.
That night, Harley Quinn merrily skips into a dark warehouse holding a letter from "Mr. J". When she enters the basement of the warehouse she is surrounded by darkness and one faintly lit light-bulb. A set of clothes are tossed to her and a voice tells her to put them on, as she finishes getting dressed she notices how the clothes look like his. She then watches as The Joker walks out of the darkness and puts a red helmet on her. The next day, Alfred informs Bruce that everyone has left the manor and Bruce tells Alfred about his talk with Dick. Alfred is sympathetic, but sides with Dick on the matter. Alfred even thinks Gotham has become safe enough for Batman to retire completely. At the Gotham City Police Department, the room Jim Gordon and several officers are talking in goes dark and when the lights come back on all the police except Jim have been murdered, each sporting a sick grin. Jim grabs his phone to call Bruce and finds a note hanging off the door handle. Dick, Tim and Cassy return to the cave just as Batman gets back from investigating the scene. Batman looks over the note and finds its a request for Batman to meet The Joker at Ace Chemicals that night. Alone.
Batman gets to Ace Chemicals Plant while his allies wait in the cave. When he walks in he hears The Joker's voice reminiscing over the first time they met here at Ace Chemicals. Batman sees The Joker dressed as The Red Hood, the same identity The Joker used the night he fell into the chemicals that drove him insane. When Batman gets a hold of The Joker and removes the red helmet, he finds it is actually Harley Quinn in disguise. Harley is too horrified to explain herself, but manages to whisper "Mayor James". Batman radios the cave and tells Nightwing, Robin and Batgirl go protect the mayor, he calls Jim Gordon and tells him the same. Harley pulls Batman towards the exit and mumbles something about a bomb and the two run out just as Ace Chemicals explodes. Meanwhile, the doorbell rings at Wayne Manor. When Alfred answers the door he is pelted with a crowbar.
Batman and Harley Quinn walk into the mayor's office to find everyone infected with Joker Toxin. Luckily, Batman never stopped carrying the antidote and heals his allies, the mayor and the police of the toxin. Batman tells the police to take Harley and get whatever information they can from her, he then tells his allies to rest and let the antidote heal them while he follows The Joker. Harley mentioned "dancing the same steps" which tipped Batman off that The Joker is repeated the same moves he made when he first met him.
Barbara Gordon and Stephanie Brown go to Jim Gordon's apartment and find him infected with Joker Toxin, before they do anything a motion sensor goes off and fills the room with gas. Barbara tries to crawl towards a phone, but she is knocked out by the gas. Batman stands across the bridge of the Gotham City Water System. On the other side waits The Joker. The Joker reminds him of the first time they met here and what his plan was back then, but this time claims he just killed a bunch of people and tossed them in the water beforehand. The Joker uses silly-string ropes to constrain Batman and goes on to say his time away from Gotham has made Batman weak. Batman has been forced to rely on children to get the job done. He got his back snapped by a wrestler, played puppet in Wonderland, and couldn't even beat some old bird-men without help. The Joker wants to help Batman by cutting those who have dragged him down. Batman drops a flame pellet that torches the ropes and allows him to escape and attack The Joker. But when he has Joker close to him, The Joker lands a kiss on Batman's cheek. Batman starts to get woozy and The Joker tells him he drenched his own skin in poison. Non-lethal though, The Joker isn't done with Batman yet. Batman falls into the water below.
Batman wakes up in the Batcave surrounded by Nightwing, Robin, and Batgirl. They inform him that Barbara, Steph, Selina, Holly, Alfred, and Jim are missing. Batman has to research into The Joker's next move, but Nightwing is upset he puts The Joker before his family. Robin knows Batman is holding something back and Batman admits that after his third run-in with The Joker years ago, he went into the cave the morning after and found one of Joker's cards on his Bat-Boat. Everyone is shocked, if The Joker got into the cave once he could do it again and might know all of their identities, but Batman believes otherwise. Nightwing asks why he kept this a secret and why he isn't asking for help, Batman simply claims The Joker has gone too far and he can't risk getting anyone between him and The Joker. Batman has to follow a lead and refuses anyone's help, so Nightwing leads the others on a mission to find their friends.
Thanks to Harley Quinn's interrogation, Batman learns about The Joker's secret passage into Arkham Asylum. Batman enters the Asylum and is greeted by The Joker's voice calling Arkham "The Knight's Kingdom". The Joker taunts Batman as he walks by Arkham employees dressed as Batman and Joker being forced to dance, a canvas made of human bodies displaying the epic battles between The Joker an Batman, a hallway featuring a flaming horse, and a room full of inmates dressed as knights. Batman gets to the head office and finds The Joker in front of a throne. Before Batman can grab him, The Joker shows him a collection of screens showing Nightwing, Robin, and Batgirl being captured. With hostages in hand, The Joker escorts Batman up to the throne where more drawn-on-skin pictures show the death of the second Robin, the crippling of the first Batgirl, and the eternal battle between The Joker and Batman. When Batman sits on the throne, an electrical surge runs through him and knocks him out.
Batman finds himself in a cave sitting at a dinner table and strapped to a chair, around the table are Nightwing, Oracle, Robin, Batgirl, Spoiler, Catwoman, Jim Gordon, and Wildcat. Each of their faces are wrapped in medical paper and a covered silver platter sits before each of them. The Joker appears ready to host the royal feast and the last meal for Batman's allies. Alfred Pennyworth crawls out from a cavern-hypnotized by Joker's toxins-and opens the platters as instructed. The faces of Batman's allies lay on the platters and send their owners into a panic. Batman breaks from his chair, but triggers a flaming mechanism The Joker set up. The Joker runs into the caves as the flames grow, but Batman recognizes these caves as the ones near the Batcave, he uses a explosive in his belt to blow the roof of the cave. Water from above puts out the fires and Batman unwraps the paper on his allies faces, discovering their faces were never cut off and it was just part of The Joker's sick game. Nightwing tells Batman to follow The Joker while he helps the others. With his allies free and helping Alfred, Batman follows The Joker to the end of a cliff. The Joker tells Batman that his laughing toxin has been released into the dining cavern and that his allies will most likely go crazy and kill each other. But Batman trusts his family.
We see Batman's allies laughing hysterically, but holding each other tight as they brace the pain. Batman and The Joker fight it out until The Joker tries to escape by leaping down a waterfall, but Batman catches him. Batman tells him that all those years ago The Joker never entered the cave, that this is as far as The Joker got. The Joker stopped himself before learning who Batman is because he doesn't care, because knowing who Batman is would ruin the game. But when The Joker was missing, Batman looked into his background and learned his real name. As Batman begins to whisper The Joker's real name into his ear, The Joker pushes off of him and falls into water below.
Batman goes back to the dining cavern and is happy to see the laughing gas wore off, but he also sees his allies surrounding Alfred. Robin tells Batman that Alfred had been exposed to The Joker's poison the longest and that his heart couldn't take it. As Alfred begins to die, he lays a hand on Batman's face and tells him that he loves him.
Dick Grayson's narration is heard over Alfred's funeral, we learn that he and Barbara decided to postpone the wedding given the events and that the rest of the family is taking a leave of absence. Tim and Steph are heading to London, Cass has agreed to bring Holly to Hong Kong with her, Barbara and Jim are spending some time in Metropolis, but Selina decided to stay in Gotham and keep Bruce company. After these events, Dick has done a lot of thinking and has finally understood why Bruce wanted him to be the next Batman. With Bruce done as Batman and The Joker gone, Gotham needs a new kind of hero to push it in a better direction. Someone who can a knight without embracing the darkness. Dick hangs his Nightwing costume in the Batcave and opens the case holding the new Batsuit. Bruce stands beside him and tells him he'll guide him every step of the way, but Dick refuses. Bruce spent his entire adult life guiding people, saving people, but-just this once-Dick is going to be the one to save Bruce.
In the new Batsuit, Dick stands above Gotham City and talks over the communicator with Barbara. They discuss their wedding and argue over some of the details, but Dick gets a call from Officer Harvey Bullock about "some freak in a pig mask" kidnapping homeless people. Dick says goodnight to Barbara and spreads his wings. Batman jumps into the city below.
After the credits, we open on truck stop in the middle of the desert. A trucker wakes up in the bathroom next to a sleeping prostitute and sneaks out. When he gets to his truck, a short, disgusting man pulls the trucker off the vehicle and demands money for "his employees" services. When the trucker refuses, the little man begins beating him with his bare hands. A limo pulls up and one of Darkseid's minions-The Glorious Godfrey-finds the little man sitting on the trucker's corpse and counting money. Godfrey identifies the man as Sleez, another minion of Darkseid. Sleez refuses to help Darkseid after being banished to Earth, but Godfrey informs him that Darkseid can make all of Earth into Sleez's scum-shack. Sleez grins and says "try pleasure palace".

Stars In The Night's Sky

Many comic book fans like to toss out the possibilities superhero lineage. "How cool would it be if Captain America had a kid with Black Widow? That kid would be badass". Fortunately, we aren't the only people kicking those ideas around. Today we'll talk about the superheroin that could be, this Week's Z-Lister is Nightstar!
Created by Mark Waid and Alex Ross in "Kingdom Come #1" in 1996, Mar'i Grayson is one of many heroes to be part of a tainted generation. In the world of "Kingdom Come" the heroes of old have taken a backseat and allowed younger, more dangerous heroes to battle without concern for casualties. "They fight simply to fight, their only foes each other". As Nightstar, Mar'i is one of these many uncontrollable heroes and is the daughter of Dick Grayson (the first Robin, formally Nightwing, and then Red Robin) and Starfire (who is MIA in this universe). When Superman begins building a superhero army to lock away those who threaten the Earth with their abilities, Bruce Wayne/Batman gathers old and new heroes alike to mislead Lex Luthor's group of villains. Along with new versions of Kid Flash, Speedy, Aqualad, and the son of Donna Troy, Nightstar helps Batman's party defeat Luthor and battle Superman's regime. In the process, Nightstar falls in love with Ibn Al Xu'ffasch. Ibn is the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul, and by relation is the grandson of Ra's al Ghul and heir to his throne. If Ibn sounds familiar, that is because his main universe equivalent is Damian Wayne, the son of Batman and Talia and the current Robin. At the end of "Kingdom Come" Nightstar is present when her father Dick, grandfather Bruce and lover Ibn all bond as a family.
In the unnecessary sequel series to "Kingdom Come" she becomes an active member of The Titans, taking her father and mother's position as one of the team's elder members. She also works as security for Green Lantern Alan Scott's space station. Finally in "Justice Society of America #22" in 2009, we learn Mar'i and Ibn eventually got married and had a son and a daughter, continuing The Grayson bloodline. And mixing it with the Wayne bloodline, offsetting enough.
Nightstar is definitely one of the successful cases of superhero breeding, bringing the best personal aspects of her parents. Even as a dangerous and rebellious hero she showed the moral balance of the heroes before her. I'd be interested to see more good stories about "What If" heroes, but I think we should leave Nightstar's happy ending the way it is. After all if Nightwing and Starfire had such a cool kid imagine what kind of kid their kid and Batman's son would make! Again, the twisting of those two bloodlines is either really sweet or really creepy.

Get Your Game On!

Some of you long-time readers of The Panel Biter will remember I did a list of DC Comics characters/teams I think could be used for awesome video games. Well, fairness is fair and I've been putting this topic off for a while. What Marvel properties could make great video games? This is The Panel Biter's Top 5 Most Wanted Marvel Games!

5. Ant-Man
Ant-Man is one of those characters who could fit various types of video games. Imagine a puzzle platformer where you're size determines your progression. Imagine a 3D adventure game where you can explore lush environments from the size of Paul Rudd to the size of an ant! Imagine a real-time strategy game where you coordinate your legion of varied ants to help you complete your mission. Really, an Ant-Man game could be very clever in how it chooses to use this hero's powers. Games like "Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap" have done some cool stuff with the shrinking mechanic and I really like the sub-game of training useful insects. Plus, with alter egos like Giant-Man, Yellowjacket, Goliath, Wasp, and Stature the multiplayer options are already on the table.

4. Daredevil
If anyone should have a quick-time counter combat system, its the Man Without Fear, Daredevil. Roaming New York with Spier-Man may make you feel free, but patrolling Hell's Kitchen in the dead of night dressed like a freaking devil will give you the ultimate power fantasy. Mastering martial arts, acrobatics, and detective skills would give you different ways to play, and a feature determining Daredevil's alignment would craft a cool narrative. Be a good superhero like Spider-Man and you could be an Avenger, be a murderous vigilante like The Punisher and you could lead The Hand ninja clan with Elektra by your side. The best feature would be the "L.A. Noir" angle where as Matt Murdock-Attorney at Law-you need to piece clues together and get answers from criminals, information that will aid you when you dive into the night serving justice. And, again, "detective vision" is just Batman wishing he had blind-people sonar.

3. Doctor Strange
For Doctor Strange-ya know, the guy keeping monsters under beds and inside locked in closets-I think a play-style similar to "Skyrim" would be ideal. Choosing what kind of Sorcerer you want to be would make the game very replayable. Are you the kind of guy to shoot fireballs and lightning strikes, or will you conjure swords and battle axes? Will you craft barriers and suppress your enemy's attacks, or summon a demon to do the dirty work for you? Using your mysterious Sanctum Sanctorum to venture multiple dimensions, battle foes like Doctor Doom, Dormammu and Shuma-Gorath, customizing the tomes and equipment that make you the powerful wizard you are! All the while receiving the utmost guidance from your servant, Wong.

2. Civil War
"Civil War" is one of Marvel's most famous stories. It was loosely used in "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2", it will be featured in "Captain America: Civil War", and will even get a comic book sequel "Civil War II". Now when I see the red and blue sides, I think of one thing: Pokemon! Game series like "Pokemon" made bank off of duel versions of the same game, so why not make an RPG based off Civil War? In "Civil War: The Iron Arm" you play as Iron Man, recruiting heroes to join the U.S. government. In "Civil War: Freedom's Shield" you play as Captain America, joining with other heroes who believe in their rights! Each version could have different characters to recruit, and to make the hero versus hero battles feel special you could throw a third party in there like HYDRA or The Skrulls just to see how each side deals with each other and this unaligned threat. Marvel could really make bank on this idea, and even produce a better ending than the original comic!

1. Iron Man
During the 2015 "Secret Wars" Marvel published a short series where we see a version of the Marvel Universe where a virus has forced all citizens to wear Iron Man armor. That made me think of how cool an "Iron Man: Armor World" could be. Think about it: customizing your own Iron Man armor, buying and trading and selling parts, weapons and upgrades, battling Iron Man's lame gallery of villains and challenging your friends to battles, races and more! Think of a "Grand Theft Auto" sandbox-like game where you can meet with other players and compare armors! I'd want a really technical system, too. If I get hit in the legs, flight should be half-usable, if I fire a Uni-Beam, I should have to recharge. Energy, ammunition and part performance should all be factors. The hub layout for Iron Man's helmet could be your screen layout. Let's take that one step further, Oculus Rift compatibility. Put on the visor and you put on the helmet. See, fly, fight, and feel like Iron Man in one of his many armors with the Oculus Rift's virtual reality setting. You may look like an idiot in your living room, but in "Armor World" you'd be another man in a metal suit!

Big Atom in Bigger China

"Captain Atom"

The film opens with a flashback about five years ago. A woman's voice tells us that Nathanial Christopher Adam was a military Captain, he served in the US military's attempt to cease the war between Kahndaq and Bialya, he is highly respected for his leadership skills and determination. However, Adam was emotionally tormented when Bialyan radicals tortured and killed several of Adam's men in front of him. Feeling powerless and witnessing the rise of superheroes, Adam was the first to volunteer when General Wade Eiling started "Project Atom". Along with several other military officers, Adam was sent underground to research an alien craft that landed on Earth back in the 1950's. The rest of the crew is killed by the ship's defenses and only Adam and Clifford Zmeck reach the ship's engine room. Zmeck accidentally activates the engine and the ship explodes. Adam wakes up one year later, his skin appearing to be metal. Doctor Susan Megala tells Adam that "he's been in an accident". As we see Adam looking into a mirror and going through shock, the voice-Megala's voice-tells us that when the government officials pulled Adam and Zmeck out of the wreckage, they discovered the immense radiation shaped the ship's metal around their bodies. Though their bodies were vaporized, their consciousnesses transferred into the radiation inside the metal suits. As such, Adam and Zmeck became beings of living energy, living in metal suits.
Captain Atom is walking through the ruins of Coast City, absorbing the radiation spread throughout. After the events of "Supergirl: Power Couple", Coast City was bombarded by radiation and Cap was sent in to absorb the radiation, allowing construction crews to start rebuilding the city. Dr Megala speaks to Cap over his communicator and informs him the president wants to personally thank him tomorrow at The White House. In the meantime, Megala has some diagnostic checks to run on Captain Atom, but Cap has a detour to make first.
Captain Atom flies to Austin, Texas to visits his parents Allen Adam and Nicole Adam. As he walks up to the house he sees his old neighbors stare at him in fear. Nicole offers to make Nate some food, but Nate reminds her that he doesn't eat anymore. Allen slowly starts to be annoyed by Nate, and when Nate mentions how afraid the neighbors are of him Allen tells him they're smart to be afraid. Allen berates his son for being what he is, instead of being a respectable war hero he had to go and get himself killed. And when God showed mercy and gave Nate another chance at life, he spent it parading around like another ridiculous superhero. Nicole snaps back, but Nate tells her its okay. Nicole reminds Allen that Nate is their son, but Allen believes his son died. "He isn't my son anymore" Allen says, "He's a holocaust waiting to happen". Nicole walks Nate outside and tells him he will always be her son, Nate thanks her and flies away.
Captain Atom meets with President Lex Luthor the next day at The White House. As he's walked through the halls of the White House, Cap notices the framed Kryptonite bullet that killed General Zod in "Supergirl: Children of Krypton". Cap thinks it's morbid, but Luthor sees it as a symbol of his evolution. Lex thanks Cap for cleaning Coast City and has a new mission for him. After The Justice League destroyed The Brother Eye satellite in "Justice League: Checkmate" the United Nations decided it would be in the best interest of the world if the blueprints for Brother Eye were to be split into chunks and given to every country. Without the other pieces of the blueprints, Brother Eye cannot be recreated by any government. However, the U.N. has received notifications that some country's portions of the blueprints have gone missing from their files. The only countries not hit by the theft are the United States and a majority of Asian countries. Lex is assembling a team to investigate every technological genius in the U.S., but he needs Captain Atom to go to China and make sure they aren't the ones trying to rebuild Brother Eye. Cap admits he isn't much of a history buff, but he thinks sending a man made out of warheads to China isn't a wise move. Besides, Cap is a soldier and not a spy. A woman dressed in black walks into the room by phasing through the door. Lex introduces Captain Atom to his new partner Eve Edens/Nightshade. While Captain Atom visits China on a peace tour, Nightshade will hang in the background and investigate China's esteemed Science Committee. Though hesitant, Cap agrees and shakes his new partner's cold hand.
At an airport in Hong Kong Secretary-General Tsung, Madame Wu Mei-Xing, and a group of soldiers await the private jet bringing Captain Atom. On said jet, Captain Atom is told on his communicator that Eve arrived at the airport successfully twelve hours prior. When the jet lands, Tsung welcomes "America's Great Hero, Captain Atom". Tsung introduces Wu as one of China's superheroes and Cap teasingly comments on how elderly she is for a superhero. Wu assures Cap that her abilities are quite devastating. The three of them get into a limo-driven by a disguised Eve Edens-and during the drive Cap sees advertisements featuring China's many superheroes, heroes he never knew existed. Tsung brings Cap to "The Second Great Wall" which is a building in the center of Hong Kong that resembles the stone texture of The Great Wall of China. This building is the home base of The Great Ten, a now retired superhero team. Tsung shows Cap around the building, but Cap stops when he sees some kind of monster destroying lab equipment in another room. He rushes in and fights the monster, but seems to match him in strength. Tsung informs Cap that the monster is actually the only remaining member of The Great Ten, Fang Zhifu and he was simply running some training exercises. Known as "The August General in Iron", Fang was the only member of the team to continue fighting crime for his government. Fang stomps off, cursing under his breath. Tsung planned on introducing Cap to Professor Chang Zhu as well, but Zhu seems to be unavailable at the moment. On the car ride to a hotel, Tsung explains that he and Zhu helped form "The Great Ten" shortly after The Justice League was first formed. However, Zhu was a genius and recognized that having a team of superpowered men and women could get out of control and so The Great Ten was restricted from making decisions without the permission of their government. Eventually, the team became tired of this dependence and either retired or became vigilantes. Fang Zhifu was the only one who stayed.
Eve Edens meets Cap in their hotel room and Cap tells her that Tsung is holding a benefit tonight and has invited him. While Eve uses a laptop to narrow down the longest-standing members of China's Science Committee, Cap takes the opportunity to learn more about her. Eve gives him very short answers, claiming her powers of invisibility and intangibility are part of a magic curse, she was recruited by Argus before being assigned to The Department of Metahuman Affairs, and that he doesn't need to know anything else about her. Cap offers to answer any question she has about him.  Eve doesn't seem to care about talking, but is curious about something. Nate Adams and Clifford Zmeck were the only two people to survive "Project Atom", but while Clifford went mad with power Nate stayed good through and through despite becoming a living energy source. Cap can't say scientifically how he stayed stable, but he tells Eve about what he went through in Bialya and figures he had seen enough evil in his life to know the good folk from the bad folk. When it came to his powers, Nate Adams already knew what not to do with them.
At Tsung's party that night, he clearly tries to get himself, Captain Atom and August General in Iron in photos together to keep up appearances. Professor Chang Zhu is present as well and is mingling with Eve Edens-yet again, disguised. Members of the Science Committee pester Captain Ion with questions about his powers, so he goes out to the balcony for some fresh air. Wu Mei-Xing meets him on the balcony and tells him that she personally trained all of Tsung's elite soldiers, earning her the title "Mother of Champions". It is because of this training that she recognizes Captain Atom as much more of a soldier than a superhero. Panic breaks out at the party as a robotic man causes destruction. Cap remembers this robotic man as a "One Man Army Construct" or Omac. One of the functions of the Brother Eye satellite was that it could trigger cybernetic implants in any Brother Eye operative and turn them into a superhuman, hence Omac. However, this Omac seems far different from the ones Cap has seen before. Captain Atom fights Omac and receives backup from August General in Iron and Wu's soldiers. Omac escapes and Cap and August General follow.
The two heroes are led to an abandoned nuclear power plant. They find the Omac collapsed on the ground, August General uses his spear to rip the cybernetic skin off Omac and sees that not only has the man under the skin has died, but that he recognizes him as one of Wu's men. Cap notes how different this Omac is from the one's he faced and August General lashes out at him, blaming him for bringing his problems to his home. During the fight, Cap discovers August General's body is immune to radiation. The fight between them accidentally activates the power plant and triggers an explosion of radioactivity. The explosion blooms outward, but August General opens his eyes to see Captain Atom absorbing the blast into himself. In the ruins of the plant, August General stands above Captain Atom and claims he won't forgive him for bringing Omac to China, but that he will give Cap his trust.
General Tsung and Chang Zhu walk out to a limo and Tsung orders Zhu to research everything he can on this new Omac. Eve hangs back and puts a tracker on Zhu's car. She tries to contact Captain Atom, but his communicator was destroyed. Cap and August General walk back to city, Cap explaining everything he knows about Brother Eye. Against his better nature, August General believes it would best to keep what they know from Tsung. If America has been any indicator, the relationship between superheroes and governmental powers is a delicate one.
The next day, Chinese protestors rally outside Captain Atom's hotel and tell him to go home. Eve claims they probably think Omac came to China just for Cap. On the bright side, Eve was able to access Zhu's personal files. As they dig through Zhu's files they find notes on The Great Ten, Project Dragonwing, The Qinghai Incident, and Mother of Champions. Cap recognizes the last file as Wu's nickname and Eve opens the file. It shows the birth records of a man named "Kevin Cho", but there are multiple birth records that differ one week from each other and death records that differ from each other the same way. Eve suggests some kind of resurrection, but Cap remembers the man under the Omac skin looked exactly like Kevin Cho. Their research is interrupted when General Tsung and a group of soldiers arrive to arrest Captain Atom and Nightshade. Tsung was informed by Chang Zhu of Eve Edens following him and one of Zhu's spies followed her to Cap's hotel room. Believing they are American spies sent to China to distract the public while America's Omac destroys China's heroes, Tsung orders for their arrest. Nightshade uses her magical powers to encase the room in darkness and Cap blows a hole through the wall. He grabs Nightshade and their equipment and they fly out. As they fly away, one of the soldiers asks if Tsung want to call in "The Immortal-", but Tsung cuts him off and calls August General in Iron.
Over a forest the two continue to fly, Cap frustrated that they've become enemies to the nation. August General in Iron rides a horse through the forest and tosses his spear at Captain Atom, stabbing through his suit and causing him and Nightshade to fall. When they hit the ground, Cap tries covering the rip in his metal suit. Nightshade uses her powers to fight August General, but he is too strong. As August General walks towards Cap Atom, Cap claims a tear in hi suit could cause him to uncontrollable explode. August General tears off a chip of his iron skin and uses it to fill the hole. When he leans back up, Nightshade phases through him and grabs his spear, she then stabs the spear through August General's leg and into the dirt under him. She prepares to phase her hand through his head, but August General quickly quotes Sun Tzu's "Art of War" and Cap holds Nightshade back. The two run off into the woods. They make it to a river and Nightshade demands an explanation. Cap tells her that he and August General related over their love of Sun Tzu's "Art of War". They agreed-in private-to use quotes from the book to indicate when one of them is being controlled by their superiors. By quoting "Art of War" August General not only informed Cap that he was on their side, but that staying low would be wise. What does not understand is how August's spear pierced the alien metal of his suit. Nightshade has an idea.
At a radio tower, Nightshade opens Chang Zhu's file on "The Qinghai Incident". In the 1950's an alien craft landed in Qinghai and sunk into the ground. Fifteen years ago, a special-ops team was sent in to investigate the craft under Qinghai. The ship's defenses killed all but one soldier: Fang Zhifu. Fang came face-to-face with the ship's pilot and killed the alien. When he got out of the ship, Fang's body started to deteriorate from an alien virus and the only way to save him was to graft the metal of the ship to his skin. The Chinese government turned Fang into a war hero and gave him a spear made from the same alien metal, but referred to the media as iron. Captain Atom sees way too many similarities, and after seeing pictures of the craft realizes the craft that landed in Qinghai was the front half of the ship that landed in the U.S. That explains why he and August General have similar abilities and why August General is immune to radiation. Wu's soldiers break into the tower and Cap and Nightshade fight them off. One of the soldiers turns into Omac and the fight escalates. August General in Iron is riding back to the city through the forest, wishing Cap the best of luck. He wishes to help Cap stop whatever is happening, but knows how powerful his superiors are. When a black jet flies overhead, August General turns around and runs back to Cap immediately.
Cap defeats Omac and watches as another Kevin Cho is under Omac's skin. He goes to find Nightshade and finds her covered in the blood of the soldiers she's killed. Cap is horrified, but feels something. He pushes Nightshade to the group and hops on top of her. At first she is offended, but then she sees a black jet drop a bomb on the area. From a cliff, August General watches as the bomb goes off and is then absorbed by Captain Atom. August General finds Cap collapsed on Nightshade-who was protected from the bomb thanks to Cap. Nightshade decides to trust August General and the two carry Captain Atom away.
In his dream, Cap hears the negative voice of his father and the encouraging voice of his mother. He wakes up on horseback and with Nightshade and August General leading the way. August General claims the jet belonged to "The Immortal Man-In-Darkness", a former member of The Great Ten. The Man-in-Darkness piloted "The Dragonwing", a craft created from the remains of the alien ship in Qinghai. August General leads the two to The Great Wall of China, where the secret base of The Great Ten hid under and where The Man-in-Darkness landed. As August General takes point to check the area for soldiers, Cap asks Nightshade about what happened back there, about the soldiers she slaughtered. Eve Edens admits to Cap that she was on Amanda Waller's Suicide Squad, while with them she learned disciplin and the horrible lengths one must go to survive. The three of them enter the underground facility and fight more of Wu's soldiers. They finally make it to a room featuring a ready-to-launch missile. Chang Zhu and Wu Mei-Zing await them. The missile contains a new Brother Eye satellite that Chang Zhu created from the files of Brother Eye he stole and from his own genius. He designed a smaller Brother Eye antenna and attached it to The Dragonwing so that he could turn Wu's soldiers into Omacs whenever he pleased, whether to create distrust or distract his enemies. When Chang Zhu and Wu Mei-Zing researched the alien August General killed fifteen years ago, they were infected with a virus too. However, Chang developed a cure that made the alien virus rewrite their biology, giving them strange new powers. While Wu Mei-Zing was not as powerful as Wonder Woman, she could create people of equal strength. The rewrite in her biological code gave Wu the ability to birth super-soldiers. Fast aging offspring with super strength and speed, obedient until their one-week expiration date. Hence "Mother" in "Mother of Champions". Chang Zhu gained incredible brain processing abilities that complimented his genius.
Chang Zhu injected the Omac system into every adult in China via a yearly flu shot and will use Brother Eye to turn every Chinese citizen into an Omac, whether they like it or not. August General claims how much he honored Chang Zhu and does not know why he has gone this far. Chang Zhu notes how every invasion of Earth is caused and prevented by American superheroes, how the constant bickering between the U.S. government and U.S. superheroes causes damage to other countries. America's heroes make all other countries weaker by comparison. No to mention nations like Themyscira, Atlantis, and Kahndaq, who have superpowered leaders. Zhu will protect his nation at all costs, even if that means making everyone a superhero. The missiles prepares to launch as Captain Atom, August General in Iron, and Nightshade fight Wu's soldiers. As the missile blasts off, Captain Atom attaches himself to it.
The missile flies upward and Cap opens a panel of the missile, planning on destroying the satellite along with the missile. However, Chang Zhu appears on the missile wearing a mech-suit. Captain Atom fights Chang Zhu, but the suit Zhu wears is made of the same alien metal from the ship. Captain Atom taps into the radio frequency of the radios Wu's soldiers carry and requests August General's spear. August doesn't think he can throw the spear that high, but Nightshade focuses her magic to teleport the spear into Captain Atom's hands. As she does, she passes out and August General shields her from the soldier's bullets. Zhu and Cap battle again, this time ending with Cap stabbing through the suit and into Zhu's stomach. Zhu claims even if he dies, Captain Atom can't disable the missile while it's in orbit. Captain Atom begs to differ. Cap stabs the spear through Zhu's stomach and into the missile, as the missile flies deeper into space he generates waves of energy through the spear and into the missile. Zhu asks what Cap is doing and Cap claims he is using the spear to funnel his powers through. Captain Atom destabilizes the atoms of the missile and the missile explodes. August General and Nightshade defeat the soldiers, but Wu escapes them.
General Tsung and the Chinese military lock-down the bunker and August General fills them in on everything that happened. Tsung still wants to arrest Nightshade for snooping around classified information, but August General vouches for her by pointing out how all of China would be under Chang Zhu's control if not for Captain Atom and Nightshade. In space, a cloud of energy surrounds Captain Atom's empty metal suit. After destroying Chang Zhu and the missile, Cap breached his suit and leaked out of it. Captain Atom-as a cloud of energy-remembers his parents, he remembers his troops, and he remembers that the mission is not over. The energy cloud begins filling the suit once again.
Nightshade stands atop the Great Wall looking up at the night sky. August General informs her that Tsung is leaving and they should too, but Nightshade knows Cap will return. Just as August General walks with her, Captain Atom flies down and hands August General's spear back to him. Nightshade embraces Captain Atom. The next morning, General Tsung awards Captain Atom, August General in Iron and Nightshade medals for saving the country. All of Cap's naysayers become his new fans and August General in Iron removes of the two prongs of his spear and gives it to Cap as a memento. Cap asks what August General will do next and August General plans on rebuilding The Great Ten, he even offers to call it "The Great Eleven" if Cap is ever in town. Cap tells him only if Nightshade can round it out to twelve, she is his partner after all. As their plane leaves, General Tsung tells August General that if The Great Ten return they will be treated as an ally of the Chinese government instead of a tool of it. While on the plane, Cap tells Nightshade that she isn't a member of The Suicide Squad anymore and that he'll do whatever it takes to protect her, but Nightshade reminds him how she saved his butt enough times to balance the saving between the both of them. Nightshade remembers she had another question, she asks "Do you and The Atom ever hang out".
Doctor Megala meets with President Lex Luthor and Vice President Amanda Waller at The White House, surprising them both because Cap and Eve were supposed to meet with them. Megala tells Luthor that Cap and Eve are celebrating with Cap's parents, both of whom are very proud of him. Megala knows Luthor could care less about China and only wanted Brother Eye out of his nonexistent hair. Unlike Luthor or Waller, Megala cares about Cap and Eve and assures him they won't be needed for any new missions anytime soon. Waller gets defensive, but Luthor agrees with Megala. When the doctor leaves, Luthor informs Waller that they won't need Captain Atom to be the country's poster boy anymore, not when "the new Superman" is out there.
That night at the Adam house, Cap sits on the porch and watches all the neighbors shut out their lights. Allen Adam joins him and regards how Cap doesn't sleep anymore either, but Allen knows it's not just because Cap doesn't need to sleep, it's because he couldn't even if he could. Allen couldn't sleep right for years after the service, he could never imagine what Cap had to go through after becoming a superhero. Allen and Cap bury the hatchet, Cap tells him "I still have a helluva pitch". Our film ends with Captain Atom playing catch with his father.
After the credits, we see a chamber open in dark dungeon. Desaad-the decrepit lackey of Darkseid-opens the chamber and set his eyes on a barbaric beast-man tearing the meat of a humanoid leg. Desaad requests the man's assistance in the coming war, but the man has no interest. Even with the mentioning of the man's father Darkseid he holds no interest. Desaad then mentions that Darkseid let Orion live, this causes the man known as Kalibak to rise from the pile of corpses and offer his services to Darkseid.

Maggott's Maggots

Both on the page and off the page, Marvel Comics is slowly removing The X-Men from their lineup of properties because 20th Century Fox owns the film rights to The X-Men franchise. As more and more mutants fall into obscurity, I'd like to take the chance to introduce one of the oddest mutants out there. His name is Maggott and he is this week's Z-Lister.
Created by Scott Lobdell and Joe Madureira in 1997's "Uncanny X-Men #345", Maggott was a mysterious new mutant who joined The X-Men just to find Magneto. He also looked really stupid in the 90's, but everyone looked stupid in the 90's. Doesn't help that Lobdell came up with him. Maggott kept his origin to himself, but eventually told Wolverine his story. He was once a boy named Japheth who lived in South Africa and was often sick, too sick to digest solid foods. Japheth ran away from home hoping to die in the wild and spare his family the worry over his health. However, he was found by Magneto who cut Japheth open and released the two large slugs from inside him. Magneto had studied Japheth from afar and discovered his mutation was that his digestive system was in the form of two sentient maggots. These maggots crawl out of Japheth's stomach, eat food, and then return to Japheth's body to transfer the nutrition gathered. Japheth refused to join Magneto's anti-human crusade, but after witnessing a group of white South Africans wipe out his village Japheth was forced to run away and find Magneto again. Not because Magneto's ideals reached him, but because his new form of eating still caused Japheth much pain. Along his travels he took the name Maggott and named his maggots Eany and Meany.
When he joined The X-Men, Maggott believed his maggots were starting to attack innocent people while he was asleep and almost turned himself over to the police, feeling responsible for what his maggots did. The X-Men discovered it was actually a group of demons committing these crimes and Maggott was released. Maggott was one of three characters almost possessed by the telepathic villain Shadow King. The telepathic hero Psylocke sealed Shadow King's mind away, but had to retire from being a hero because any use of her telepathy could've released Shadow King again. Which it did.
Maggott reappeared as a prisoner at Weapon X's concentration camp where he was experimented on and killed. However, one of Maggott's maggots escaped Weapon X and was eventually captured by evil mutant geneticist Mister Sinister. While this maggot stayed with Sinister, Maggott and his remaining maggot were revived by a villain named Selene to be part of her undead army of mutants. Maggott escaped this army and appeared both at a party at The Hellfire Club and as part of Cyclops' Million Mutant March.
I find Maggott to be yet another interesting character who fell through the cracks. His relationship with his sentient digestive system was really one-of-kind and if writers weren't so obsessed with writing the next great Wolverine or Cyclops story I could've seen Maggott taking off in some entertaining directions. What if one of his maggot's betrayed him? What if he developed more maggots? What if he died and his maggots became a new superhero duo? Weird ideas like that are easy to explore in a book where aliens, demons and time travel are all weekend activities. And hey, diversity! All and all I actually like Maggott as a concept and a character and hopefully a writer comes along who has the same opinion and really does something cool with this oddball X-Men.
Thanks for reading.

Infinate Power

Infinity. A never ending, never diminished, unlimited supply. To have so much power in the palm of one man's hand is to wish chaos over this universe and every other. Today we'll talk about the most powerful object in The Marvel Universe: The Infinity Gems.
As told in "Thanos Quest" and "Avengers/Ultraforce", The Gems (or Stones) were originally part of a god-like being known as Nemesis. Nemesis was so powerful, so omnipresent, she could not stand the loneliness of being almighty and used her own powers to kill himself. Though her consciousness died, the remains of her body turned into six gemstones that carried a portion of her powers. When Thanos The Mad Titan discovered the origin and powers of these stones, he constructed a special glove that would allow it's wearer to use all six of the gems without going insane or becoming overwhelmed by their power, this glove was called The Infinity Gauntlet. The Infinity Gems have been sought by Thanos, feared by the cosmos, guarded by The Elders of The Universe, and hidden by The Illuminati, but no matter what they are used for or wherever they go, The Infinity Gems will always exist.

The Soul Gem (Green in The Comics)
Said to be the most powerful of the Gems, The Soul Gem gives it's user the ability to absorb, take over, and manipulate souls. By stealing the souls of their victims, the user also gains the abilities of them. Unlike the other Gems, The Soul Gem is sentient and has an unlimited hunger for the souls of others. Most notably, this Gem corrupted Adam Warlock of The Guardians of The Galaxy and caused the event known as "The Infinity War". When The Illuminati took one of each gems, Doctor Strange took The Soul Gem, most likely due to his mastery of spiritualism. This gem has yet to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Time Gem (Orange in The Comics)
This gem is pretty self explanatory. The user can not only travel to the past or the future, they can also send objects or people to those times as well. The user can see into any point in time, manipulate the events of history, alter time around a certain space, or alter the effects of time around themselves. The most dangerous use of this gem is too rewrite time to one's desires or trap victims in an endless time loop. Namor (Kind of Atlantis) guarded this gem. This gem has yet to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Space Gem (Purple in The Comics, Blue in The Films)
This gem gives it's user control over space itself and as such can manipulate the placement of objects, places, people or anything else. By using this gem, one could appear on the other end of the galaxy in a second. This gem can allow it's user to even appear at multiple places at once, this ability would grant the user Omnipresence as well. You could stick an Egyptian pyramid into the side of Jupiter with this spacial power. Black Bolt (King of The Inhumans) hid this gem. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe this gem has been identified as The Cosmic Cube in "Captain America: The First Avenger", The Tesseract in "The Avengers" before it was finally identified as The Space Gem. Originally used as an energy source by The Red Skull and HYDRA, this gem seemingly warped Red Skull to another place and currently resides in Asgard.

The Mind Gem (Blue in The Comics, Yellow in The Films)
Manifesting the subconscious of the universe itself, The Mind Gem gives it's user unlimited amounts of knowledge in fields they are both familiar and unfamiliar with. Any language, any piece of history, any science, it is all accessible to The Mind Gem. This gem also allows it's user to read minds and delve into dreams, and when combined with The Power Gem it can use this ability on more than once mind. The gem also grants psychic offensive and defensive abilities. Naturally, Professor X of The X-Men held on to this gem. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this gem was hidden inside a staff Loki used to turn his enemies into his slaves. The staff reappeared in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" where HYDRA's Baron Von Strucker used the staff to endow superpowers onto Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. My personal logic is that The Mind Gem unlocked Scarlet Witch's full mental abilities and unlocked Quicksilver's full physical abilities, traits mankind could unlock generations after our bodies have evolved. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are not Inhumans in either universe. The Gem was then placed onto the head of Ultron's creation "The Vision" and gave this new hero an enhanced perception of life.

The Reality Gem (Yellow in The Comics, Red in The Films)
On par with The Soul Gem, the Reality Gem allows the user to grant wishes in the literal sense. By altering the laws of physics, science and life itself, this gem can alter reality and make the impossible happen. History dictates Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed, but this gem can make it so your car is made out of the bullet that killed him. Because this gem is so powerful, it is the quickest to make it's user lose control. Tony Stark/Iron Man (founding Avenger) watched over this gem. This gem appears as a liquid-like weapon called The Aether in "Thor: The Dark World" and unwillingly opens pockets into another dimension. This gem was given to a being called The Collector by The Asgardians in an attempt to separate the gems.

The Power Gem (Red in The Comics, Purple in The Films)
The Power Gem has most often been used to absorb all the energy in the universe and throughout time itself, giving it's user access to the most amount of power ever. Most of the time it's users have applied this power physically to make them stronger and more durable than any other being in the universe, however this power can also be used to boost the effectiveness of the other Infinity Gems, duplicate any superpower, manipulate any form of energy, drain vigor and energy from others, and grant Omnipotence. Mr. Fantastic (leader of The Fantastic Four) protected this gem. The Power Gem appeared in "Guardians of The Galaxy" as a simple orb that could destroy planets. Ronan The Accuser planned on using this orb to enforce control over the galaxy, but a ragtag group of heroes defeated him by using the gem and turned it over to The Nova Corps for safekeeping.

The future for these gems, both in comics and films, is a mystery worth waiting for. Every time these gems are used they bring interesting stories promised to flex your mind with questions of morality and possibility. Personally, I love the angle of Marvel's smartest characters holding on to each one and I'd love to see more ideas like that! Hope you've learned why guys like me are jumping in our seats when these little trinkets appear on screen!
