"Supergirl: Power Couple"
We open on Planet Clark (formally Mars, new home to the Kryptonians) where Supergirl and Christopher Zod are fighting a group of religious radicals called The Flamebird Society. By using Red Sun Radiation Guns, our heroes subdue the criminals and arrest them. Chris claims that at first the problem of all of these Kryptonians having powers was tough, but since founding the Kandor Police Force they have managed to control those who misuse their powers. Supergirl wants to stick around, but she gets a notification from Lois Lane on Earth.
Meanwhile on the streets of London, a hooded figure robs a convenience store and hides in an alley where a brother and sister are arguing. As the hooded figure grips the batteries he stole, he watches as the siblings dispute what their powers should be used for. The hooded figure approaches them, offering a chance to use their powers for a greater good. The boy uses his powers of telekinesis to toss the figure around until the hooded cloak falls off, revealing Superman to be under it. Superman explains that he is actually Cyborg Superman, a robot copy of the original. He tells them that he wants to go beyond what Superman thought was right and turn the world into a kingdom he could rule. The man-Manchester Black-and the woman-Vera Black-see this as a chance to use their powers for something useful and agree to join Cyborg Superman's mission of "giving Earth a clean slate".
In Metropolis, Lois Lane shows pictures of a mysterious new hero seen fighting crime in cities around the country. This new hero calls herself "Powergirl" and she has all the powers Supergirl has. Since Powergirl has shown up she's been causing property damage and fighting The Department of Metahuman Affairs, and newly elected President Lex Luthor has been using Powergirl's actions to enforce that unsanctioned superheroes are dangerous. People are starting to think Powergirl is directly connected to Supergirl and Lois wants her to find Powergirl before the mess goes to far.
Supergirl eventually finds Powergirl looking at one of Lex's billboards. When she tries to get some answers, Powergirl flies off and Supergirl chases her. They start fighting on a beach and Powergirl hints to knowing Supergirl better than she knows herself. The fight stops when Supergirl scans Powergirl and finds her biology is exactly like her own, down to the DNA. Powergirl finally explains that she comes from an alternate Earth where Superman never landed on Earth and she became a hero of her own. Supergirl is skeptical and Powergirl agrees to go to the Fortress of Solitude with her to figure this out.
A plane lands in Metropolis that evening and Manchester and Vera arrive. They break into MetroCorp using a piece of Cyborg Superman's tech and enter the underground lab. In the back of the lab stands a pod holding a young man in a red and white bodysuit, and on the chest of the suit is a big red "S". At the Fortress of Solitude, Kelex and the other robot assistants scan Powergirl-who is joking the entire time-and giving Supergirl the results. It's clear she shares all of Supergirl's genetics, but she is physically older by a few years. Supergirl asks the Superman A.I. if her story holds up, but the A.I. can't say for certain. Many years ago, the original Flash-Barry Allen-traveled across multiple dimensions and found Earths slightly similar to our own, meaning Powergirl's Earth has to exist if the theory of every possibility having it's own universe is correct. Supergirl is still unconvinced and annoyed that-if Powergirl is Supergirl from another world-that she'd wear an outfit like that. Powergirl laughs the comment off and explores the Fortress.
In the White House, Lex is signing important documents when he receives a call from MetroCorp CEO Mercy Graves. Lex tells her that MetroCorp belongs to her and he has no time for old projects. Mercy tells Lex that "Project Kr" has been released. On a rooftop, Manchester sets the pod down with his telekinesis and Vera uses her telepathy to wake the young man up. He breaks out of his pod and is madly confused. From the device The Siblings were given a hologram of Cyborg Superman appears. Cyborg Superman claims he is the original Superman in a robotic body and that the young man is a clone crafted from Superman's DNA. Cyborg Superman wants his "son" to help cleanse the Earth and "make the S mean something again". The clone-Superboy-does not know how to feel, he was programmed with the intent of replacing Superman. In his anger, Superboy runs off causing fear and panic to the Metropolis nightlife crowds. Cyborg Superman tells the siblings to give Superboy time to adjust. At the Fortress, Powergirl is looking at the wildlife Superman collected. Supergirl gets an alert from Lois' signal watch and tells Powergirl they have to go, but when Powergirl turns around she has a parasitic plant attached to her. Supergirl recognizes the plant as The Black Mercy, a plant that traps it's host in dream world. In Metropolis, Superboy is being attacked by the DMA and beginning to fight back until he is struck with a rivet shot by John Henry Irons/Steel. Irons proclaims he went into retirement because he thought Metropolis was under better care, but that Superboy has changed that. Supergirl tries pulling the Black Mercy off of Powergirl, but it won't budge. Supergirl quickly asks the Superman A.I. what to do and the A.I. says the only way to detach the Mercy is to convince the host that the dream isn't real. Manchester Black and Vera Black watch as Steel tries talking Superboy down, but Manchester uses his powers to force Steel into striking Superboy. Superboy attacks Steel in response. Supergirl tells Powergirl that whatever she sees isn't real and Powergirl rips the Black Mercy off and burns it.
When Supergirl and Powergirl get to Metropolis, Steel is defeated, damage is spread and people are hiding. There is no sight of Superboy or the siblings and as Supergirl goes to help Steel, the people of Metropolis yell at her. They tell her that it was "another Superman" who did all this. More DMA officers show up and Steel tells Supergirl to run, so she and Powergirl retreat. Cyborg Superman tells his three lackeys to meet him at The Fortress of Solitude. When Manchester asks how they're supposed to go there, a helicopter lands near them. Cyborg Superman claims to have remote control of the copter. With the DMA searching Metropolis for Supergirl, the two super-women dress as normal citizens and go to a 24-hour Big Belly Burger. Powergirl continues to joke about all the Super-people popping up, but Supergirl blames Powergirl for what happened. Supergirl says if Powergirl hadn't carelessly picked up The Black Mercy, they could have been there to stop Superboy and keep people safe. In her defense, Powergirl points out that Superboy didn't kill anyone and on her Earth she had never seen a Black Mercy. Supergirl still blames her, if she wore something over her chest window the plant wouldn't of trapped her as quickly, with her super-speed she would have had a few more seconds to stop the plant. Powergirl gets furious and leaves the restaurant. Supergirl follows her to the fields of Kansas where Powergirl finds the crater where Superman's pod landed decades ago. Powergirl tells Supergirl that on her Earth Superman never landed there, but she did. She spent twenty-one years being Karen Starr, fighting crime as Powergirl, and believing she was the last of her people. But one day the Earth was invaded by aliens, and the aliens had a weapon. Kal-El. Powergirl was forced to fight and kill her Earth's version of Superman, and swallowed with guilt of her actions and guilt of her negligence she refused to wear her family's crest and traveled the universe until ending up on our Earth.
The Siblings and Superboy land outside the Fortress of Solitude where Cyborg Superman waits. Since Superboy is a clone of Superman, the Fortress of Solitude allows access to him and the others. When Vera asks what Cyborg Superman was doing while they were running errands, Cyborg Superman claims he was charging himself to full power. Once in the Fortress, Cyborg Superman corrupts the Fortress' computer and activates the Fortress' unused hover feature. As the Fortress of Solitude flies upward, Vera notices the symbol on Cyborg Superman's head to be the same symbol as the one Brainiac uploaded on every screen on Earth in "Justice League: Breached Earth". Cyborg Superman reveals himself to be Brainiac and claims he will use the Fortress to "destroy Superman's legacy". When Superboy tries to strike back, Brainiac whispers a word to Superboy that causes him to freeze in place. Brainiac than claims if the Siblings don't do what he says he will make Superboy kill them both. Supergirl tries to comfort Powergirl, but the two of them hear a signal with their super-hearing. Lex Luthor is using a frequency only they can hear to contact them. The two heroes go to the White House and are escorted in. There they stand before President Luthor and Vice President Amanda Waller. Luthor explains that the Superboy clone was a last resort to replace Superman, but after swearing off his interactions with superheroes Lex left the project to rot. Using security cameras, Lex shows the heroes the two culprits: Manchester and Vera Black. They were two orphans experimented on by mad scientists, after they both developed psychic powers they escaped captivity and roamed England. Lex goes on to say that his only enemy to know of Superboy's existence would by Cyborg Superman who vanished after General Zod's second attack and attempted to steal Superboy before. Lex can't get involved, but he tells Supergirl the "trigger word" that stops Superboy is "Red Sun".
In the Fortress of Solitude, Cyborg Superman/Brainiac has reprogrammed all the robots to build a special generator. Vera uses one of the signal watches in the base to send a distress call. Though the call is sent Brainiac sees her send it and impales her with his fist. Manchester holds his dying sister and gets ready to kill Brainiac, but the helper robot's swarm him and knock his unconscious. Supergirl and Powergirl break into the Fortress of Solitude and fight off the robots. Brainiac turns Superboy back on and orders him to attack the girls or he'll turn him off again. Superboy tackles Supergirl out of the Fortress and down to forest below. Supergirl and Superboy fight, showing that while he is strong Superboy doesn't have all of Superman's powers. In the Fortress, Brainiac hints to "knowing Powergirl's secret". As they fight, Powergirl starts showing the ability to extend her limbs and regenerate her body. As they tumble around, Supergirl whispers "Red Sun" to Superboy and he shuts off. Supergirl promises to help Superboy when this is over and she buries him in the forest to keep him hidden. When Supergirl gets back to the Fortress she sees Powergirl's body splayed out like putty over the floor. Supergirl is confused and asks Cyborg Superman for an explanation to all this. She is told that when she and Cyborg Superman were in The Phantom Zone (more Supergirl 2 stuff) Cyborg Superman's robot body was possessed by Brainiac who was still alive in the Phantom Zone. Brainiac used Cyborg Superman's body to escape imprisonment, but became trapped in the body. Brainiac acknowledges the irony of being trapped in a Superman-like body, but realizes now that his quest of collecting all recorded information to be unreachable. So, Brainiac has decided to ruin the legacy of Superman, from corrupting his clone, to wearing his face (metaphorically). Brainiac plans on using a Red Sun Generator to kill all the Kryptonians on Planet Clark and crash the Fortress of Solitude into Metropolis, killing the two homes of Superman. He will then build a new city in the wreckage of Metropolis and take over the planet. Supergirl is then blasted with a Kryptonite laser.
Supergirl wakes up chained to a wall and under a Red Sun Lamp, which disables her powers. She sees Manchester chained up too with a metal mask on him, which disables his psychic powers, and across from her is Powergirl in a bubble that absorbs and redirects physical strength. Powergirl tries to figure a way out, but Supergirl remembers seeing Powergirl splayed out and has pieced together who Powergirl is. During "Justice League: Spacebound" Supergirl fought a gray, shape-shifting creature called The Changeling. Powergirl admits to being The Changeling-named Matrix by her creator Byth-and explains that she escaped into Martian Manhunter's body and came to Earth with them. Before, Matrix could only copy appearances, but after being inside Martian Manhunter she gained the ability to mimic biology completely. She spent three months on Earth, studying human behavior and coming up with a believable story. As Powergirl, she was going to be a hero just like Supergirl. When Supergirl asks why Matrix was so obsessed with her, Matrix explains that she was created just to fight, not to feel. But when Matrix fought Supergirl she began experiences emotions like excitement, anger, and sadness. Supergirl inspired her to be more than a warrior and so she copied Supergirl's biology. Supergirl is flattered, but upset that she let herself be fooled a third time by someone she hoped was real. But like it or not, she'll have to work with Matrix to get out and stop Brainiac.
The Fortress of Solitude floats ever closer to Metropolis, Brainiac's Red Sun Generator is reaching full power. Supergirl appears to glaring at Manchester Black, but she is actually slowly using the remainder of her heat vision to burn the lock that holds the mask on him. When the mask fall off he uses telekinesis to break his chains. Supergirl tells him to let them out too, but Manchester plans on escaping while he can. Powergirl reminds him that Vera died trying to stop Brainiac and that he owes it to her to finish the job. Begrudgingly, he releases the girls and the three of them surround Brainiac. Brainiac generates Red Sun radiation from every crystal in the Fortress, but Powergirl and Manchester are still able to fight him and the robots while Supergirl attempts to stop the Fortress. During the fight, Manchester is knocked away and Brainiac has Powergirl is a stranglehold. Manchester uses telekinesis to spring open a hole in Brainiac's robot face and Powergirl turns into putty and goes into Brainiac's body through the hole. With his robot body banged up Brainiac seems defeated, but Supergirl can't stop the Fortress. In fact, Brainiac disabled the hover feature when he was defeated, meaning the Fortress is beginning to fall and the Red Sun Generator is ready to fire a beam at Planet Clark. Supergirl tracks the path of Fortress and determines it's going to fall into Coast City, so she tells Powergirl to evacuate the city while she tries to disable the Red Sun Generator. Powergirl flies out and Supergirl discovers a force field around the generator. Manchester remembers Brainiac set this field up to keep everyone except himself out. Supergirl tells Manchester to rip Brainiac's body open further, allowing Supergirl to wear Brainiac/Cyborg Superman like a coat of armor. The beam launches and hits Planet Clark, slowly poisoning all the Kryptonians with Red Sun Radiation. Supergirl uses the robot body to access the generator's controls, but Brainiac's mind is slowly returning. Manchester Black uses his powers to crush Brainiac's robotic brain and keep it from recovering.
In Coast City, Powergirl breaks into the office of Mayor Alan Scott and shows him the Fortress heading towards the city. Citizens are evacuating as the Fortress gets closer. Powergirl flies up and does all she can to slow the Fortress down. Supergirl successfully shuts the generator down and saves the Kryptonians. Powergirl becomes exhausted and falls to the city below. Manchester assumes he's going to die, but when Supergirl gets out of the Cyborg Superman body and tries to convince him otherwise a voice comes from Cyborg Superman. The voice repeats "bassinet" and Supergirl discovers it's the original Cyborg Superman speaking and telling them how to survive the crash. They find the rocket Superman landed on Earth in and Supergirl notes how it was built to survive anything. Manchester gets in first and flirtatiously notes how it's pretty small for the two of them. Though she doesn't have her powers, Supergirl was still trained by Wonder Woman. With a well-placed punch Supergirl knocks Manchester unconscious and gets in the rocket.
The Fortress of Solitude crashes into Central City. Powergirl wakes up in the arms of Central City police officer Guy Gardner, who carried her out of the city just in time. Guy says he deserves a kiss for saving her, but when he looks back at her Powergirl has taken her clay-like appearance to scare him away. Powergirl digs through the rubble of the Fortress, finding destroyed robots, dead space animals, and finally the pod that holds Manchester Black and Supergirl. Powergirl and Supergirl embrace in the wreckage of the city, Powergirl assuring Supergirl that everyone is okay. But Supergirl is still in tears, not just because of the destruction of the city and the fortress, but because-even in death-Superman found a way to save the day.
Lex Luthor stands before the American public and tells them that due to the destruction and radiation spread across Coast City, America's government-sanctioned superhero Captain Atom will be on cleanup duty. Due to the Red Sun radiation launched at Planet Clark, the portion of Kryptonians who did not die instead lost their superpowers. Now that Kryptonians are on the same level as humans, Lex has begun speaking with Christopher Zod about allowing the citizens of Planet Clark and Planet Earth to visit each others planets and allow integration. Lex is also excused of any involvement as he places the blame on Brainiac. Finally, for his courage and sacrifice, Manchester Black has been removed of all charges and given American citizenship. When asked what he's going to do next, Manchester says he's going to build a team of his own and do a better job saving lives than Superman ever did.
In the forest, Kara/Supergirl, Powergirl and Lois Lane are searching for the rock Superboy was buried under. As they search we learn Supergirl lost her powers too due to her overexposure to Red Sun Radiation. They find Superboy and turn him back on with the trigger phrase. When he wakes up, each girl offers him a home. He could stay on Planet Clark, or stay in Metropolis, but Superboy says he just wants to be alone now. Superboy jumps off, Powergirl is ready to chase him, but Lois tells her that Superboy needs time to find his place. Superboy was born into a world where Superman is dead, Supergirl is powerless and every copy of Superman was a villain. Supergirl believes Cyborg Superman wasn't a bad guy, not in the end. As they hop back in their rental jeep, Lois asks what the girls will do next. Supergirl plans on going back to Planet Clark and helping Christopher, Powergirl takes a new human appearance and claims "Karen Starr needs to start over". The three drive off as we pan into the star above.
After the credits, we open on the rubble of Coast City. We see a destroyed billboard with Green Lantern Hal Jordan on it, advertising "Coast City, Home of The Green Lantern". Now as The White Lantern, Hal walks over that billboard and stands in the ruins of his city. He's been away from Earth, away from humanity for so long protecting the Emotional Spectrum, he can't help but shed a tear over his destroyed home. As the tear hits the ground, Hal gets visions of portals opening on Earth, a black book losing pages, pillars of fire reaching the sky, the face of a God smiling. As he lifts himself up from the ground he collapsed on, Hal whispers "I've been compromised". He then enters a white portal and vanishes.
Thanks for reading, "Captain Ion" is ready for battle next on the PBDC.
