Gwen Facts

Are you a fan of the many Gwens of The Marvel Universe? Because we got One Dozen Gwen Stacy Facts!
1. Gwen Stacy was introduced as a love interest for Spider-Man in "The Amazing Spider-Man #31" in 1965. She dated Peter Parker and didn't know he was Spider-Man. Gwen even hated Spider-Man due to her father Police Captain George Stacy dying under Spider-Man's watch. Gwen's most infamous story was unfortunately her death in 1973's "The Amazing Spider-Man #122" written by Gerry Conway. The story became known as "The Night Gwen Stacy Died" and became a big moment in Spider-Man's career. One that reminded people both the Marvel Universe and our own world that the heroes of Marvel Comics were not perfect.

2. Following the backlash of Gwen's death, Stan Lee convinced Gerry Conway to bring Gwen back to life so that people wouldn't take their anger out on him (Stan) anymore. He also told Gerry to do it without using magic. Gerry had read a story about theoretical cloning procedures and wrote the original "Clone Saga" in which Gwen was brought back as a clone created by a new villain named The Jackal. This story resulted in a two-year long story also called "The Clone Saga" which took place between 1994 and 1996. That story is considered by many to be one of the worst Spider-Man stories ever written.

3. Miles Warren/The Jackal was actually Peter and Gwen's college professor and he had romantic feelings for Gwen. After her death, Miles created a clone of Gwen and a clone of Peter. He created the Gwen clone to have sex with, and the Peter clone to beat up. The Jackal never lost the resources needed to create Gwen clones so whenever a Gwen clone would turn into goop, he would simply create a new one to have sex with. He even sold a few Gwen clones to Deadpool to use as maids.

4. Gwen was thrown off the Brooklyn Bridge by The Green Goblin and Spider-Man's webbing actually snapped her neck. In 2004, it was revealed in the story "Sin's Past" that before Gwen's death she had traveled to Europe and ran into Norman Osborn (Green Goblin). Gwen was upset with Norman because of how he treated his son Harry, but their aggression towards each other led to Norman and Gwen having sex, Gwen's first and only sexual experience. Gwen became pregnant with twins and tried to give them away and return to New York. However, Norman found the kids and killed Gwen so that he could raise them himself.

5. In the Ultimate Universe, Gwen is much more of a rebel due to her lashing out against her policeman father. However, after his death Gwen moves in with Peter and Aunt May. Gwen is eventually killed and revived after an encounter with the Ultimate version of Carnage.

6. In the "House of M" Universe, Gwen never died, married Peter, and had a son. In fact, Spider-Man is a celebrity superhero in this universe and his identity is public. When Spider-Man's life gets made into a film in this universe, actress Mary Jane plays Gwen Stacy.

7. Gwen Stacy was portrayed by Emma Stone in the film "Amazing Spider-Man" and it's sequel. After death in the sequel, and the infamous "Sony Hack", an email from Sony revealed plans to introduce clones into the third installment and bring Gwen back to life as a clone. Possibly even a clone with Spider-Man's powers. Though this didn't come to pass, the upcoming animated film "Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse" will feature Gwen Stacy as Spider-Woman.

8. Spider-Woman or Spider-Gwen was created in "Edge of Spider-Verse #2" in 2014. In her universe, Gwen Stacy was bitten by the radioactive spider instead of Peter. While Gwen becomes Spider-Woman, Peter attempts to give himself superpowers to fight his bullies, but his experiments lead to him becoming The Lizard. After Peter's death, J. Jonah Jameson labels Spider-Woman a murderer and the NYPD (including her own father) hunt her down. Fortunately her father learns of her secret and promises to help her.

9. Spider-Gwen is part of a band called The Mary Janes with her universe's versions of Mary Jane Watson, Betty Brant, and Glory Grant. She plays drums. Following "Spider-Verse" Spider-Woman obtained a piece of technology that allows her to travel between her universe and Marvel 616. This allows her to have friendly relationships with Cindy Moon/Silk and Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman. It allowed her to have a romantic relationship with Miles Morales, who also came from another universe.

10. It was recently announced that Spider-Gwen/Spider-Woman will be changing her superhero name to "Ghost Spider". This is due to the difference between the name of her book and the name of her superhero identity.

11. Spider-Gwen's web slingers actually convert moisture in the air into webbing. These were invented and given to Gwen by her world's version of Janet Van Dyne, a former crime-fighter herself. After a crossover with Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman and Silk, Gwen actually lost her powers. She was able to substitute her powers by using her world's version of The Venom Symbiot. This was highly dangerous due to the suit's dependence on aggression, but Gwen had to use it to continue being a superhero. She managed to maintain control and is currently using undergoing experiments with her world's Reed Richards to recreate her powers.

12. Following Spider-Gwen's popularity, Marvel released a slew of variant covers depicting Gwen Stacy as other characters like Wolverine, Groot, and Doctor Strange. The most popular creation was of Gwen Stacy as Deadpool. Taking advantage of the popularity, Marvel had Christopher Hastings create "Gwenpool" as a character and had her feature in a back-up story in "Howard The Duck #1" in 2015. When she got her own series in 2016, we learned Gwenpool was from "our reality" and was actually named Gwen Poole. She asked a tailor to make her a superhero costume and he misread the application as "Gwenpool", so he made her a Deadpool costume. While it isn't explained how she got to the Marvel Universe, Gwen uses her knowledge of the Marvel Universe to interact/fight with heroes and villains. She also has the ability to effect things only the reader can see like panels, word bubbles and the space between panels.
