The Crisis Ends

"Justice League: Crisis Part 2"
We see a flashback to the first Justice League meeting in the Watchtower satellite eight years ago. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash (Barry), Green Lantern (Hal), and Aquaman listen as The Martian Manhunter announces the last group of people possessed by Starro The Conqueror have been freed. Lantern is quick to pull out the wine and have a toast, but Batman refuses to let the meeting be distracted. The rest of the League agrees with Hal's idea and Batman folds, as they toast to a job well done Superman states his pride in all of them. Batman agrees, even teasingly taking pride in Hal. "Wow" Hal mocks back, "Batman has a sense of humor".
We open in the present, in space debris from the destroyed planet Apokolips floats aimlessly. In the rubble is Darkseid, alive and well. He opens a mysterious Black Book and reads aloud strange words. After they are spoken, the book's pages flip wildly and small black rings sprout out and fly towards Earth and one flies onto Darkseid's hand. As his eyes glow black and his outfit darkens, Darkseid notices one page of the book is missing and without it his plans cannot be completed.
In Wayne Manor, Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle are watching "The Legend of Zorro" on television together. They hear a strange noise and enter the other room to find a white portal opening. From the portal is the voice of Hal, asking for Bruce. Hal claims a dangerous new evil will be rising soon and he needs help now. Bruce kisses Selina and tells her to call the family, he then jumps into the portal. Bruce exits the portal and finds himself in an underground basement. Also there is The Martian Manhunter, Aquaman/King Arthur of Atlantis, Green Arrow, Superman/Connor Kent, Wonder Woman/Queen Diana of Themyscira, and The Flash/Barry Allen. Sitting before them is Hal Jordon the White Lantern who is noticeably weak. Before anyone can talk, Barry questions why Hal so recklessly brought them here. What's important to note is that at this time in the PBDC Barry Allen was trapped in The Speed Force Dimension keeping his rival The Reverse Flash from hurting his loved ones, with Barry trapped (after season 3 of his show and just before JL4) his nephew Wally West had been The Flash. Hal used his White Lantern power to pull Barry out of the Speed Force Dimension and-because there's no time there-Barry comes out as young as he once was. Hal tells Barry that there are worse things than The Reverse Flash, but Barry claims he lost Reverse Flash somewhere along the way and saw something worse. Before he can go on the others insist Hal explain himself. As he puts it, most beings in the universe know The Emotional Spectrum is a collection of cosmic energies all fueled by different emotions. What people don't know is that the various colors of the Spectrum spawned when organisms began to have feelings, but that the first living creatures in the universe didn't have emotions. Because of this, the only two certain things to living beings were the concepts of life and death. So before the Green Light of Willpower was ever created from the will and desires of creatures, a White Light of Life and a Black Light of Death were formed before The Emotional Spectrum. These two powers were so dangerous those who sought The Emotional Spectrum did their best to keep White and Black a secret. However, a mad scientist known as Krona discovered the Black Light and wrote it's secrets in a book. Darkseid has taken that book from Hal and it turns out that the Anti-Life Equation Darkseid had been looking for can be unlocked with the power of the Black Light. Only a White Lantern can defeat a Black Lantern, but Hal lacks the power. Luckily, Hal stole one page from the Black Book and knows how to stop Darkseid for good.
We see Darkseid's black rings land on Earth in cemeteries everywhere. The bodies of the dead rise from the ground. One ring flies towards into the sun and we see Superman (Clark) pull himself up from the sun as a Black Lantern. Back on Earth, Bruce asks if Hal needed help why not call more heroes or at least younger ones. Hal claims with such low energy he could only afford to call the people closest to him. Superman (Connor) seems uncomfortable with that statement, but Hal claims "half of a Clark is close enough". Hal goes on to explain in order to become The White Lantern he had to embrace every emotion and then ignore every emotion, but there's not enough time or resources to do the same to these seven. Instead Hal pulls out a case with each Lantern Ring inside it, he thinks united they could have the same as much power as a White Lantern. Each Lantern Ring chooses a hero based on their emotions: Martian Manhunter receives the Red Ring of Rage because of the pent-up angst he has over the loss of his people, Aquaman gets the Orange Ring of Avarice as he continuously risks his life to become the king of his city, Batman gets the Yellow Ring of Fear because of his motif of scaring criminals, Green Arrow gets the Green Ring of Will for the unstoppable determination he shares with Hal, Superman gets the Blue Ring of Hope as Connor's lineage is founded on hope, Wonder Woman gets the Indigo Ring of Compassion because rather than be The God of War she chose to be a leader of her people, and The Flash gets the Pink Ring of Love for he has sacrificed his freedom to keep his loved ones safe. Now with the "Lantern League" formed, they must find and defeat Darkseid.
At Wayne Manor, Selina Kyle finds a couple standing in the hall and when they turn Selina is shocked to see the Wayne's alive again. But they are clearly Black Lantern Zombies. Selina runs off but is shoved to the ground by Alfred-also a Black Lantern. Selina is saved by Dick Grayson/Batman II before Alfred can shoot her with a light-construct shotgun. Robin, Spoiler, Batgirl and Wildcat run in and fight The Wayne's. The Lantern League arrives in Metropolis and plan on finding Darkseid, but more and more Black Lantern Zombies rise and the team unwisely splits up. Hal is telepathically watching each hero and noticing that each ring is having an effect on them. Barry runs home to see his wife Iris-who has been waiting for him to come back. The two have a sweet embrace until a yellow blur fills the room and Iris is swiped from Barry's arms. The Reverse-Flash is back on Earth-he escaped with Flash unable to keep in The Speed Force-and runs throughout Central City with Iris under his arm. He is happy to return to torturing The Flash, but he is stopped by Wally West/Flash II and Bart Allen/Kid Flash II. Reverse-Flash is beaten by the Flash and the two other Speedsters because "he's been out of practice". Barry explains to Reverse-Flash their fight against the Black Lanterns and Reverse-Flash simply smiles, runs into a police station and shoots himself in the head. Before Barry can recover the body, Reverse-Flash becomes a Black Lantern.
Batman stands before Arkham Asylum, he says to himself how easy it would be now to use all this power and scare his villains until they fear the outside world. He gets word from Hal that Green Arrow and Wonder Woman are the only ones searching for Darkseid and that everyone is using their abilities selfishly. Bruce gets an SOS from Wayne Manor and tunes Hal out. Hal tries to communicate with Aquaman who is in Atlantis fighting the Black Lantern Dead King with help from Aqualad, Tempest and Mera, but the revived Tula and Ocean Master also threaten the kingdom. Hal tries to contact Martian Manhunter, but he is swallowed by rage as he battles Black Lantern versions of Jonah Hex, Toyman, and General Zod. As he fights he is joined by Kara Kent (Supergirl), Christopher Zod, Power Girl, Steel, Adam Strange, Alana Strange and a group of Rannian/Kryptonian soldiers. Kara sees Manhunter is enraged and out of control so she tells him to open his mind and see he's not the only person struggling. Martian Manhunter sees Booster Gold and Blue Beetle II fighting the former Blue Beetles Ted Kord and Dan Garret, he sees Cyborg, Beast Boy, Raven, Starfire and Deathstroke fight Terra, he sees The Shazam Family battle The Wizard, and finally he sees Superman II defending Ma Kent and The Ross Family from the Black Lantern John Kent. After the Black Ring on John is destroyed-and he returns to being a corpse-Superman II hears an alert on Lois Lane's signal watch is Metropolis.
When Superman II arrives at the apartment of Lois Lane, he meets face-to-face with Black Lantern Superman. Connor tries to explain himself, but Clark is clearly different from the other Black Lanterns. Clark can think for himself, he's just as honest as before, but he has anger inside him. Ever since he died Clark has been watching Earth, seeing all the imitators, seeing his crest be defaced. Clark saw the birth of Connor and thought it was unnatural, how the passing of the Superman name was unearned. Lois begs Superman to help the heroes, but Superman truly believes Darkseid's goals are best for the world. Superman-in his honesty-tells Connor that Darkseid plans on going after Hal Jordon for the last page of the Black Book. Before Connor can go to warn Hal, Clark knocks him to the ground below and the two Supermen begin to fight.
Batman arrives at Gotham Manor and captures The Wayne's and Alfred, but Bruce's feelings are compromised just by the sight of his dead family members. Dick tries to consult Bruce, but a light-construct batarang is thrown into the back of Robin by Black Lantern Jason Todd. The Wayne's and Alfred join Jason as well as Black Lantern versions of Man-Bat, Kathy Kane, Mad Hatter and Lincoln March/Thomas Wayne Junior. Back-to-back scenes show Connor's fight against Clark, Bruce's fight against Jason, and Wonder Woman's fight against her mother Hippolyte. Green Arrow finds Martian Manhunter and tells him they need to regroup. Manhunter has his control back and agrees to reestablish a psychic link. When he does, Connor is able to tell the others that Darkseid is going after Hal. Before they can move, Black Lantern Manchester Black stabs Supergirl in the chest. Because her powers are gone she begins to die in Manhunter's arms. The heroes around him fight off more Black Lanterns as Kara tells Manhunter that she loved him like a father. Kara dies and Manhunter sends off beams of red energy to burn away all the Black Rings that try to possess her. Arrow gets Manhunter on focus and Adam Strange promises to protect Kara's body.
The Flash Family successfully destroyed Reverse-Flash, The Batman Family destroy the revived Family members, Aquaman reclaims his kingdom, Wonder Woman mercy kills her mother, and Connor is seconds away from death at the hands of Clark, but Clark flies off. The five heroes meet with Arrow and Manhunter in Central City where Darkseid has erected a large spire and Hal Jordon is held inside. They approach the tower, but Clark shows up. Each Leaguer tries to talk Clark out of Darkseid's control, but Batman speaks up. He tells Clark to let them go after Darkseid while they settle things. Wonder Woman tries to talk Bruce out of it, but Clark agrees to Bruce's wager. Clark and Bruce fly off while the six heroes enter the spire. Superman and Batman land on an abandoned island and begin fighting. Batman creates a light-construct armor and they clash with light-based weapons and attacks. The rest of the League enter the throne room of the spire and find Darkseid sitting with Black Rings surrounding him. Hal Jordon is held in black bubble and is being harmed by it's energy. "Truly" says Darkseid, "You have not learned". Darkseid summons Black Lantern Orion to fight the League for him. Superman is winning his fight against Batman, but Bruce has one last trick. Batman-with complete knowledge of the element's molecular makeup-creates Kryptonite with his Yellow Power Ring. He uses the Kryptonite to pierce Superman's chest. Superman wraps his arms around Bruce, crushing his back as Batman kills him. "You've been waiting for this, haven't you" asks Superman, "An excuse to kill me. A chance to know you could". "No, Clark" Batman replies, "From the day I worked beside you I have never wanted this day to come. Goodbye, my friend". Superman's body becomes filled with Kryptonite and evaporates, leaving the Black Ring Batman destroys.
Batman shows up to the fight and Orion is seemingly knocked away, but it's too late as Darkseid forces the missing page out of Hal's body and flies to the top of the spire. Hal is slowly dying in the arms of his friends. Hal claims if he dies so do the rings he gave them, but Black Lantern Orion uses the power leftover from The Astro Force to keep himself and Hal alive for a little while longer. "Even in death, I am not my father's boy" Orion says "I am still a New God". Flash recognizes the term "New God". On the top of the spire Darkseid is basking in energy as he has discovered the Anti-Life Equation. Manhunter claims the longer they wait the more people will see the energy and be robbed of their freewill. The League battle Darkseid, but he is too powerful with the energy enveloping him. The Flash can see the energy's frequency and believes if they can introduce an opposite energy they could open Darkseid up for a killing blow. Flash then uses super-speed to have a conversation only he and Superman can hear. Flash then runs into a time portal while Superman orders the others to create walls around the area. Rays of color create a dome around the top of the spire and Superman yells as loud as he can, vibrating his vocal cords at a frequency opposite of the energy Darkseid is using. It comes out like a song that bounces off the walls. Echoes of the song can be heard even by Lex Luthor who is helping prison guards ward off Black Lantern criminals. The energy of The Anti-Life Equation evaporates for a brief minute and out of the time portal comes Flash who clings onto Darksied's back. From the portal, a black figure flies through and stabs a spear through The Flash and Darkseid.
Darksied and The Flash fall to the ground as the black figure walks back into the time portal, "Nobody escapes The Black Racer, Killer of Gods". Flash-in his dying moments-explains to the heroes that the figure who chases him in The Speed Force kept calling him a "New God" and claimed it was his duty to make sure New Gods die when their time comes. Orion fills in the gap, claiming when a New God dies they don't cease to live, but they are targeted by the mysterious Black Racer and are killed by him instead. Darkseid is slowly dying, his ring is destroyed, and he crawls his way towards the Black Book. Orion picks the book up and before Darkseid can use his Omega Beams to evaporate him Orion blocks with the book, causing Darkseid to destroy the black book and all information about the Anti-Life Equation. "You may think you'll come back to life with the same trick you used before" says Orion, "But you won't. Your ring is gone and so is your source of Death's power. I am the only Black Lantern standing and I assure you it will stay that way". Darkseid tells Orion he will be tipped, he will try to bring back his beloved Bekka from the grave. "She is dead" says Orion, "As are you". Orion uses the Astro Force to obliterate Darkseid. For good. Black Lanterns across the planet become corpses again, but Hal and Barry are sure to die. Superman asks what Orion is going to do. "I have an idea" he says, "But I don't like it".
Orion meets up with Mister Miracle and Big Barda. He asks Miracle to take over as The White Lantern and go live on New Genesis where he can't be bothered. Miracle accepts the responsibility of being The White Lantern and he and his wife Big Barda return to New Genesis. Meanwhile, Orion remains the only Black Lantern and lives on an asteroid out in space. Alone. While Miracle becomes the new guardian of the Astro Force, and Orion takes control of the Omega Force, the entire Green Lantern Corps comes to Earth to join in the funeral of Earth's many causalities. This includes Kara Kent, Hal Jordon and Barry Allen, along with many civilians. President Amanda Waller assures the American people that the war against Darkseid is over and that another crisis has been averted. We hear voice-overs of many people talking about the superhero community. Some people are terrified to think their loved ones could come back to life, some think the heroes should have found a way to keep them alive and free them from Darkseid's control, some people think it's awesome all of Earth's heroes banded together, but some think superheroes just need to go away. As these voices continue we are shown scenes of Bruce (using a walking cane) and Selina watching as Tim, Cassandra, Stephanie and Holly somberly hang up their costumes. Steel and Power Girl don their own versions of the Superman costume as Superman II salutes a statue of Clark, Kara, Jor-El and Lara-El in the new Fortress of Solitude. We see Kyle Rayner, John Stewart and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps build a floating city above the Earth. They brand it "Watchtower 2, in memory of Hal Jordon" and Batman II walks into it's main hall and opens a file of potential Justice League members. Atlantis is risen from the ocean and given a direct road system to the US, an Amazonian embassy is built in Washington, The United Nations raises flags for Planet Clark (home of the Kryptonians), Atlantis, and Themyscira. Oliver Queen becomes mayor of Star City, Martian Manhunter becomes a member of Congress to represent the superhero community, and Lois Lane begins writing a book called "God Is Just A Man".
Bruce meets Diana in a diner as they watch a commercial of Booster Gold advertising "Justice League Unlimited". Connor meets them in the diner and thanks them for inviting him to these meals, he knows it was a "Trinity-only thing". Bruce orders coffee, Diana orders water, and Connor orders a beer. When they give him a look Connor asks if it's wrong because he's technically eight or because he's Superman, but Bruce claims it's just weird because Clark always got milk. They share a laugh and share what they've been up to. One of the other customers at this restaurant hears them laughing and says "Shut up, losers". The three look at each other in silence. "Maybe Darkseid had the right idea" Bruce says as they all share a sneer.
After the credits, the cast of the movie sit in chairs and the actor who played Connor Kent speaks to the audience. "As some of you may know, this is the last movie in our series and it's been a blast bringing it to you all. We appreciate all your support and we hope we brought the DC universe you imagined to life. Just because the legend is over, doesn't mean the fight is over. We may be gone, but all of you have the chance to be heroes. To do the right thing, to inspire others, and to bring light to a bleak world. These characters aren't just action figures, they're men and women who believe justice isn't just a dream. Thank you all for following the DC Cinematic Universe and keep that dream a reality. Goodnight".
Thank you for reading The Panel Biter DC Universe.
Top that, Snyder.
