Cap Facts

Lets see how much of a Captain America fan you are! Here are One-Dozen Captain America Facts!
1. Captain America wasn't a founding member of The Avengers. In issue #4 of the first volume Namor The Sub-Mariner found Captain America frozen in a block of ice and brought him to The Avengers. Thanks to his super-soldier serum Cap survived the decades of deep-freeze and was thawed out by the heroes who would eventually become his friends.

2. Cap was also "the half-child" of The Avengers title. Cap was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby while the rest of the Avenger's cast were characters created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, making Captain America the only non-Stan Lee creation (but still a Jack Kirby creation) of the book.

3. As we all know Captain America has been prominent in two time periods: the 1940's during World War II and the ever-changing "present". Though he joined the Avengers in 1963, in 1969 it was established Cap was part of another superhero team back in the 40's called The Invaders. He and his sidekick Bucky worked alongside Namor The Sub-Mariner and The Human Torch. The original Human Torch was a robot, by the way.

4. Captain America and Bucky are a classic hero/sidekick team, but the dynamic of the duo was changed in the Ultimate Universe where-rather than being a child soldier-Bucky was a war photographer.

5. Captain America's signature shield is made from the fictional metal Vibrainium. Found in the caves of Wakanda, this metal absorbs vibration waves and turns them into it's own power source. For example, when tossing the shield Cap can bounce it off surface to surface to increase it's speed and force. Vibrainium has also been used for Black Panther's various weapons and for the villain Klaw's sonic wave blaster.

6. The original story behind Captain America getting his round shield was dated back in the 40's. Cap had aided in rescuing Wakanda and-as a sign of peace-Wakanda's leader forged a Vibrainium shield for Cap and in return Cap gave the Wakandans his classic badge-shaped shield.

7. There was a time when Steve Roger's denounced his American citizenship and continued fighting crime as "The Nomad".

8. Despite being plucked from the 1940's Steve Rogers maintains only the good social aspects of his culture. He believes in freedom, human rights, individuality, expression, teamwork and second chances. It is these aspects that make an "All-American hero" a well liked fixture of The Marvel Universe. Steve does not retain most of the negative aspects of his culture. He is not racist as we see one of his oldest friends is Sam Wilson/The Falcon, one of the first African-American superheroes. In a 1980's story Cap finds out a friend of his from the 1930's had grown up to be an openly gay man and Cap overcame his homophobia to accept his friend. As we see with Peggy Carter Cap is not opposed to treating women as his equals.

9. The Super-Soldier Serum gave Steve Rogers superhuman strength, speed, durability and brain processing. Military tactics, strategic thinking, and various forms of martial arts are all abilities he acquired through training and study rather than the serum. Cap can mathematically plan out where he needs to be whenever he flings his shield based on where he tossed it and what it hits. The only extraordinary ability Steve Rogers had before becoming Captain America was his artistic prowess as he specializes in cartoonist drawings.

10. Bucky Barnes was named after Bucky Pierson, a basketball player Joe Simon knew in high school.

11. In the 1950's Captain America comics continued without Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. Since Atlas Comics (formally Timely Comics, later Marvel Comics) had ownership of Captain America and could do what they pleased Joe and Jack decided to go to Harvey Comics with a knockoff called "The Fighting American". The character went from being serious to a satire in a matter of issues. In 1997 Rob Liefeld ended his time on Marvel's Captain America book and instead planned on buying the rights to Fighting American from Joe Simon. When the price was too high Rob created a knockoff of Fighting American he called "Agent America". When Simon and Marvel took legal action to Rob's creation, the deal was made that Rob could continue writing Agent America, but was not allowed to show Agent America throwing any shield-like objects.

12. In 1992 the character Doctor Druid used a spell to turn Captain America into a werewolf. Druid also turned a small village of people into werewolves, but Cap was able to maintain his humanity thanks to his Super Soldier Serum. As "Capwolf" Steve battled the villagers and defeated Doctor Druid.
