An Eye For An Eye

One of my many fears for the rebooted Marvel Comics Universe is that it will depend too much on Marvel's movie universe. I know there are some enevital changes and I can adjust, but part of my worry is over Nick Fury and how he stands in this new universe. That's why today I'll be giving my Pitch-It for a new Nick Fury origin for Marvel's new comic universe, "Codename: Fury".

My concern is that Marvel's new universe will solely regard Nick Fury as the African-American version so many are familier with. His popularity spans comics, movies, and cartoons, but "Nick Fury Sr" was actually a white man. The black Nick Fury we all recognize is said to be "Nick Fury Jr" in the current comics. Now don't get me wrong, it's not a matter of race, I enjoy Samuel Jackson-I mean Nick Fury Jr-just as much as most people. It's the legacy of Nick Fury I'm worried about. To put things in perspective, Nick Fury Sr has been around since War World II, over the years he's used life model decoys-robot copies of himself-to carry out duties on Earth while he has secretly protected Earth from outer space threats. All while his illegitimate son has acted as Director of SHIELD.
My pitch stems from an old James Bond fan theory that fell apart after the Daniel Craig trilogy of Bond films. The idea was that the "James Bond" identity was never a person, but a code name. That's how multiple different people from different periods of time could all be Bond. Obviously, Skyfall sank this theory, but still it was a neat concept, one that could be applied to another fictional spy. So, for this new Marvel Universe, maybe Nick Fury could be more than just one guy.
The story takes place in the year 2001, where a nameless African American war hero is brought into SHIELD. He rises above the ranks of secret agents and finds himself deeper in SHIELD's web as he meets a mysterious old man calling himself "The First Nick Fury". The First reveals to the nameless soldier that the name Nick Fury has been passed from agent to agent since the 1940's. As part of his recruitment into the Fury Project, the nameless soldier has his left eye removed and replaced with "The Eye of Scorpio" a type of data base that loads the knowledge and experiences of every past Fury into the nameless soldier's brain (hence the eyepatch). All this knowledge sharpens the nameless soldier into the perfect agent. The First renames this soldier Nick Fury and vanishes from SHIELD.
A generational origin for a spy like Nick Fury would lend many spin-off stories to this new Marvel Universe. There could be a woman Nick Fury in the 60's, an asian Nick Fury in the 70's, the possibilities are open to anything, really. Stories could have the current Nick Fury come to blows with his predecessors or run into a robot copy gone rogue. Having multiple Nick Furys means nobody really losses out of their preferred version of the character. I just think an origin like this would be much more fascinating then rehashing the old origin or just giving Nick Fury Jr everything Nick Fury Sr had. Besides, if Captain America gets whack job replacements, why can't Nick Fury!? Thanks for reading!
